What is Erik ten Hag’s salary at Manchester United? This is a widely asked question as the former Ajax manager continues to come under increased scrutiny at Old Trafford.

Manchester United Paid Ajax £2.5m Compensation To Sign Erik ten Hag

Manchester United agreed a compensation package of £2.5 million with Ajax to bring Erik ten Hag and his assistant Mitchell van der Gaag to Old Trafford in 2022, putting an end to his five-year spell in control of the Dutch outfit.

During his time in Amsterdam, Ten Hag led the club to three Eredivisie titles, two KNVB Cups and guided Ajax to the semi-finals of the 2018-19 Champions League before being knocked out by Spurs.

After years of chopping and changing manager post-Sir Alex Ferguson, many Manchester United fans believed Ten Hag’s appointment was a long-term plan to bring the club back to the pinnacle of English football.

The Red Devils were able to trigger a clause in Ten Hag’s Ajax contract worth £1.6 million and paid an extra £900,000 to have Van der Gaag join him in the Old Trafford dugout.

Erik ten Hag Signs Three-Year Contract With United Till 2025

In April 2022, Ten Hag was appointed as manager of Manchester United starting from the beginning of the 2022/23 season until June 2025, with the option of a further year.

Following triumph in the Carabao Cup in early 2023, there were talks about an immediate contract extension for the 53-year-old but plans were put on hold – which could be seen as a blessing due to the club’s disastrous start to the 2023/24 campaign.

According to various outlets, Ten Hag is earning £9 million per year as manager of the 20-time top-flight champions – £750,000 monthly, and is under contract for another 20 months.

Amid the Red Devils’ slow start to the season, if the board of directors decided to relieve Ten Hag of his duties they would have to pay him around £15 million.

Despite A Promising Start, The End Could Be Near For Ten Hag

Ten Hag’s debut season in the Premier League was filled with ups and downs, but most Manchester United fans would have considered it a progressive and inspiring campaign.

He became the first United manager to lose his first two games in charge since John Chapman in 1921, but bounced back by beating close rivals Liverpool for the first time since March 2018 at Old Trafford.

In early January, United’s 3-0 win over Charlton Athletic in the Carabao Cup saw him become the club’s fastest manager to reach 20 competitive wins, achieving the feat in just 27 games.

A month later, the Red Devils beat Newcastle United 2-0 in the Carabao Cup final at Wembley to claim their first trophy since 2017 and end an almost six-year drought.

United were quickly brought back down to earth in their next outing and a hangover was apparent as Liverpool thumped them 7-0 at Anfield, the heaviest ever defeat in the fixture and the club’s joint-heaviest defeat of all-time.

Injury woes have dominated the Dutchman’s second season at the club, leaving United eighth in the Premier League and rock-bottom of their Champions League Group A.

According to Premier League betting sites, Ten Hag is the 5/4 favourite to be the next top-flight manager shown the door and time could be up for the 53-year-old.

Erik ten Hag made 336 professional appearances as a centre-back

Ten Hag was a centre-back during his playing career and began with Eredivisie outfit Twente, before joining Eerste Divisie and winning the Dutch second division in his first season.

In 1996, he returned to Twente and won the KNVB Cup in 2001. A year later, he retired aged 32 and kicked off his managerial career ten years after in 2012.

After hanging up his playing boots, Ten Hag turned to football management and initially took on a coaching role at Twente’s academy – overseeing the U17 and U19 teams before being promoted to assistant manager in 2006.

He worked under Fred Rutten and Steve McClaren at Twente, before joining PSV and working as an assistant under Rutten again.

In 2012, he became manager of Go Ahead Eagles in the second division and led the team to its first promotion in 17 years.

He coached Bayern Munich II from June 2013 to 2015, before returning to the Netherlands to become the sporting director and head coach of Utrecht.

Ten Hag was appointed as Ajax manager in December 2017 and enjoyed an impressive, successful spell with the Dutch giants before being snapped up by United.
