Both Manchester United and Tottenham are considering a move for Atlético Madrid’s sporting director, Andrea Berta, but face stiff competition from Paris Saint-Germain, according to the Daily Mail.

Who Is Andrea Berta?

Berta joined Atlético Madrid in 2013 and spent four years as technical director as Diego Simeone’s side reached the Champions League final twice. Following this, the Italian was promoted to sporting director in 2017 and has often been credited with a lot of Atlético Madrid’s recent success.

Having been tasked with reorganising Atlético’s chaotic transfer strategy, Berta has played a crucial role in helping the club consistently challenge the dominance of Barcelona and Real Madrid in La Liga, despite working within tighter financial constraints.

Why Are Manchester United and Tottenham Eyeing Up Berta?

Since Sir Alex Ferguson’s departure from the club in 2013, Manchester United have consistently struggled with efficiency in the transfer market, often overpaying for signings and underselling their own talent.

Following another ambling performance from managing director, John Mourtough, in this summer’s transfer window, United’s new signings are once again struggling to settle into life at Old Trafford, leading to an underwhelming start to the season for Erik ten Hag’s side.

Tottenham, on the other hand, are seeking a new sporting director following the resignation of Fabio Paratici in April, as the north London side looks to build on their strong start to the season under Ange Postecoglou.

PSG Weighing-up Berta Move

However, Manchester United and Tottenham could be forced to tie up any deal for Andrea Berta sooner rather than later if Paris Saint-Germain solidify their interest in the Italian.

According to the Independent, the French champions, who were beaten 4-1 by Newcastle United in midweek, want to completely overhaul the club’s identity as they look to place more emphasis on youth and have earmarked Berta as the man to lead them through the transition.
