Leicester City winger Kasey McAteer is the mystery player set to commit his international future to Ireland according to recent reports.

Kasey McAteer Set For Ireland Switch

Stephen Kenny was talking to the media after the win over Gibraltar on Monday night and said that he had been working on bringing a winger that qualifies to play for Ireland to the squad from the Championship.

According to reports, that player is McAteer of Leicester who are off to a flying start in the second tier. Enzo Maresca’s side currently sit top of the league with ten wins from their first 11 matches.

McAteer has made a stunning breakthrough with Leicester so far this season, netting five goals in nine games. He joined the club when he was eight years old and made his Premier League debut back in December 2021 against Newcastle United.

The 21-year-old did suffer a hamstring injury earlier this month in the Foxes’ big win over Blackburn Rovers, but should be back in training within the next few weeks.

McAteer can play on either wing or even down the middle of the park and scored in Leicester’s defeat to Liverpool in the Carabao Cup last month at Anfield.

The Foxes signed Tom Cannon from Everton in the summer, and he currently plays for the Ireland U21 side, so the duo could soon be playing senior football together for Eire.

However, Stephen Kenny’s job is not 100% safe and the Dublin man has recently come under fire after a poor Euro 2024 qualifying campaign.

The Ireland FA will likely look to sort McAteer’s allegiance out in the coming weeks, but the next set of fixtures in November may come too early for the currently injured youngster.
