Andy Newton’s ‘LAY OF THE DAY’ Tip On Tuesday: 6:30pm Southwell – CLIPSHAM LA HABANA

This Kevin Philippart De Foy-trained 4 year-old – CLIPSHAM LA HABANA – will certainly have his supporters in what looks like a very average race at Southwell on Tuesday evening.

He was last beaten just 2 lengths at Lingfield on New Year’s Eve, but still had four horses in front of him that day and is racing here off the same mark.

Yes, he’s the top-rated in the field too, but as a result as a big 9-10 in weight to carry, but the bigger worry is the fact he’s now on a nine-race streak without a win.

This run stretches back to Dec 2022, when successful in a C4 Novice Stakes race at Newcastle.

The final unknown is the track as even though there is no reason to suggest it won’t suit, this will still be his first try on the AW at Southwell, with all previous sand outings coming at Wolves, Kempton, Chelmsford, Lingfield and Newcastle.

Of the rest, you can also make cases for all the other runners in the race, including the lesser exposed Ice Cool Harry for trainer Clive Cox – meaning we’ll have seven horses running for us.

We’ve more horse racing free tips here – including our daily NAP of the Day and Lucky 15 selections.

What Is Lay Betting On Horse Racing?

In short lay betting is to bet on something NOT to happen.

With the introduction of betting exchanges like Betfair, punters can now bet on a horse or a team NOT to win by effectively becoming a bookmaker.

This can be done by staking against a horse or team on a betting exchange.

For example, if you think a horse won’t win a race and it’s 3.00 (2/1). Then you could lay this horse for £10.

If the horse loses, you will win £10 (less any set commission). Or if the horse wins you will have to pay out £20 (just like a bookmaker would).

See below another example – if you were to oppose Galopin Des Champs at 2.80 for £10.

You can see the liability if the horse wins would be £18. Or if the horse loses you will win £10 (less any commission).
