Lay Of The Day Tip For Horse Racing: Thursday 15th February 2024

The UK horse racing cards on Thursday come from Sandown, Newcastle, Southwell (AW) and Chelmsford (AW).

See below Andy Newton’s lay of the day tip – a fancied horse that he makes a case on why it might NOT win.

There are several ways to play this lay of the day tip. You can either join top betting exchange Betfair to lay horses by betting on them NOT to win (recent results below).

Or you could just rule this horse out and bet on another runner to win with the best horse racing betting sites – like BetMGM. Where you can get a £40 free bet below – you choose!

Note: Most lays selected will be priced reasonably at 4/1 or shorter. However, if any should drift before the race to a much bigger price and liability, they are probably best avoided.

Andy Newton’s ‘LAY OF THE DAY’ Horse Racing Tip On Thursday: 3:12pm Southwell – SPARKLING SPIRIT

Hollie Doyle riding SPARKLING SPIRIT should hopefully keep the price down on his Adrian Keatley-trained 4 year-old.

She wasn’t beaten far the last day at Newcastle, when 5th (of 10) and is dropped another pound here.

However, the fact remains she’s still an 18-race maiden and is actually yet to even finish second – meaning she’s an 18-race 1st and 2nd race maiden.

Yes, she seems versatile in terms of trip, running similar races over both 6f and 7f, but the other negative is that she’s also yet to race here at Southwell. The filly has raced 14 times on the AW surfaces, but as yet not at this venue.

We’ll also have course winners Spring Romance, Gidwa and Perfect Swiss running for us.

While, the final thing to give us hope is, the Keatley yard are only 2-from-24 (8%) with their runners at the course, plus Doyle is actually only 11-from-98 when riding 4+ year-olds at the course.

Overall, it’s a poor race and career placed runs, of course, give her a chance – but I’m not sure I’d want to take these odd on a horse that is winless from 18.

What Is Lay Betting On Horse Racing?

In short lay betting is to bet on something NOT to happen.

With the introduction of betting exchanges like Betfair, punters can now bet on a horse or a team NOT to win by effectively becoming a bookmaker.

This can be done by staking against a horse or team on a betting exchange.

For example, if you think a horse won’t win a race and it’s 3.00 (2/1). Then you could lay this horse for £10.

If the horse loses, you will win £10 (less any set commission). Or if the horse wins you will have to pay out £20 (just like a bookmaker would).

See below another example – if you were to oppose Galopin Des Champs at 2.80 for £10.

You can see the liability if the horse wins would be £18. Or if the horse loses you will win £10 (less any commission).
