Manchester United make the short trip to the Etihad Stadium to play bitter rivals Manchester City this weekend. We’ve looked back at the last Manchester United team to win at the Etihad.

It has been almost three years since Manchester United last beat Manchester City at the Etihad in any competition. That win came in the Premier League as the red side of Manchester ended the blue side of Manchester’s 21-match winning run.

The Red Devils, managed by Ole Gunnar Solskjær, shocked Pep Guardiola’s side by winning 2-0 to make it back-to-back wins at the Etihad.

Now Manchester United, managed by Erik ten Hag, go to the Etihad on the back of a 2-1 defeat to Fulham which has left them eight points off the Champions League spots.

We at SportsLens have looked at the last Manchester United team to win at the Etihad and where they are now.

GK – Dean Henderson (Crystal Palace)

Manchester United academy product, Dean Henderson, was in goal for the Red Devils as they played Manchester City. It was his first experience of the Manchester derby and a game he’ll remember fondly. Henderson managed to keep Manchester City out for 90 minutes, which made it two clean sheets in a row for United.

While at Manchester United, he played 29 times, conceding 25 goals. Most of his time as a United player was spent out on loan at Sheffield United, Shrewsbury, Grimsby, and Nottingham Forest.

The goalie is now with Crystal Palace after moving permanently to the London side last summer. For Crystal Palace this season, he has played eight games, after starting the season on the bench and then suffering a hamstring injury.

RB – Aaron Wan-Bissaka (Manchester United)

Full-back Aaron Wan-Bissaka started the last time Manchester United won at the Etihad. It was his second season at Manchester United after joining from Crystal Palace in 2019.

Unlike in recent seasons, in that game, Wan-Bissaka was a key part of the Manchester United set-up. Now, he finds himself a spare part with Diogo Dalot being preferred by ten Hag at the right back spot.

Despite rumours of a potential return to Crystal Palace, he remains a Manchester United player. Given the new ownership at the club, Wan-Bissaka might find himself heading for the exit door this summer.

CB – Victor Lindelof & Harry Maguire (Both Manchester United)

Both Victor Lindelof & Harry Maguire are still with Manchester United, despite both finding themselves behind Raphael Varane and Lisandro Martínez.

Lindelof has played 253 games in all competitions since joining from Benfica. This season, he has been used mainly as a substitute and occasionally at left-back.

Maguire’s Manchester United career looked dead and buried, but he has revived it this season. With Manchester United’s first-choice centre-backs picking up injuries, Maguire has found himself starting games and impressing the fans and manager.

LB – Luke Shaw (Manchester United)

Luke Shaw has been Manchester United’s main left-back since joining from Southampton in 2014. The England international has played 275 games and counting in that time, but he has a horrid time with injury.

As part of the last Manchester United team to win at the Etihad, Shaw scored the second goal early in the second half. His goal ended up being the last goal in the game.

Unfortunately for ten Hag, Shaw is currently out injured for an extended period after picking up an injury in recent weeks.

CM – Fred (Fenerbahçe) & Scott McTominay (Manchester United)

Brazilian Fred joined from Shakhtar in 2018 and went on to play 213 times for the Red Devils. He was in and out of the side before departing for Turkish side Fenerbahçe.

Scott McTominay is still with Manchester United but now finds himself as an impact substitute rather than a starter. This season, McTominay has found his goalscoring boots for Manchester United, scoring eight goals in all competitions.

RM – Daniel James (Leeds United)

Welsh winger, Daniel James, impressed with his attacking ability and pave while at Swansea City, so much so Manchester United bought him in 2019. The deal raised eyebrows as James had only played one season for Swansea’s first time prior to moving to one of the biggest clubs in the world.

James failed to ever kick on while at Old Trafford and joined Leeds United in 2021. He’s still with the Championship side now and has played 30 league games so far this season.

CAM – Bruno Fernandes (Manchester United)

Now Manchester United’s captain, Bruno Fernandes, was part of the last Manchester United team to win at the Etihad, and he scored the game’s first goal. Since joining Sporting Lisbon, he has been a main part of the Manchester United set-up and will be for the next few seasons.

If Manchester United want to win against their bitter rivals this weekend, they’ll need Bruno to be at his best to pick apart the Manchester City defence.

LM – Marcus Rashford (Manchester United)

Marcus Rashford has been a one-club man since crashing onto the scene at a young age. Rashford’s made 390 appearances for his boyhood club and will be keen to make more in the future.

This season, he has just five goals in 25 Premier League games, a goalscoring return that is poor for a player with his attacking quality. With Rasmus Hojlund injured, Rashford will have the chance to start down the middle for Manchester United.

ST – Anthony Martial (Manchester United)

Anthony Martial joined Manchester United with a lot of expectations. He delivered straight away with a spectacular goal against Liverpool. Unfortunately, he failed to live up to those expectations, and his Manchester United career is all but over.

Martial led the line for the last Manchester United team to win at the Etihad. This time around, he’ll just be hoping for a spot on the bench.
