King George Chase Trends and Stats 2023
We’ve highlighted the best Kempton stats below to apply to the final King George VI Chase runners. These will then help you narrow down the entries and give you a chance to put history in your betting corner.
Breeding: French-Bred Horses Have Dominated
First up is to check the breeding of your King George fancy as French and Irish-bred horses have dominated – winning 90% of the last 21 runnings.
You can do this by clicking on the horse’s name on most online race cards to bring up more info (see below). You are then looking for the (FR) after the horse’s name – which means this horse is French-bred.
Irish-bred horses will have (IRE) after their name.
Trainers: Paul Nicholls Has Won The King George 13 Times
If you are simply betting on the stable with the best King George record, then look no further than Paul Nicholls.
The 14-time champion trainer has won the King George VI Chase a record 13 times – more than any other handler.
Nicholls has also won four of the last five renewals, including last year’s race with Bravemansgame, who is well fancied with the best online betting sites again.
Away from Paul Nicholls, Nicky Henderson has won the King George three times and Willie Mullins has two wins.
Age: Respect Horses Aged 8 Or Younger
The oldest ever King George VI Chase winner was actually the first ever winner – Southern Hero, who was 12.
Since then, we’ve had three 11 year-old winners – Desert Orchid, Kauto Star and Edredon Bleu.
However, the best King George Chase age range have been horses aged 8 or younger. 81% of the last 21 winners ticked this Kempton stat – including the last eleven winners.
We can also take this trend further with 17 of the last 19 winners aged between 6 and 8.
Last year’s winner Bravemansgame was aged 7.
Recent Run: Look For Horses That Raced In The Last 5 Weeks
Next up is to look for horses that had run in the last five weeks.
This stat has been responsible for 18 of the last 86% of the last 21 winners.
Form: A Top-Three Finish Last Time Has Been Key
Following on from looking for horses that have raced in the last five weeks, we also want to look for ones that ran well in that outing.
A top three finish last time out has been a stat 17 of the last 21 King George winners have ticked.
While 57% (12 from 21) came into the race off the back of a win.
Favourites: No Winning Market Leader In Last Five (but overall have a good record)
Does the King George Chase favourite have a good record? This will be a popular question in the build-up to the race and the quick answer is – YES.
Okay, the race hasn’t produced a winning favourite since Might Bite in 2017, which means we are on a five-year run without a winning market leader.
However, if we go back deeper into the Kempton stats there have still been 11 winning favourites in the last 21 runnings. This works out at a 52% strike-rate, which is not too shabby considering we’ve not had a winning jolly for five years.
Last year’s King George favourite was L’Homme Presse, who unseated his jockey late on, when looking booked for a place.
Past Winners: Since 1988 We’ve Seen 14 Past Champions Win Again
Finally, the King George VI Chase has been a cracking race for past winners.
The first horse to win two King Georges was Halloween who spooked his rivals in 1952 and 1954. While the first back-to-back winner was Pendil in 1972/73.
Pendil’s win started a craze of past winners coming back for more – with Captain Christy (1974/75), Silver Buck (1979/80) and Wayward Lad (1982/83).
And this run has continued right up to the present day with a massive 14 past King George Chase winners coming back to take the race again since 1988. With many also doing it more than once.
These were – Desert Orchid (4 wins), The Fellow (2 wins), One Man (2 wins), See More Business (2 wins), Kicking King (2 wins), Kauto Star (5 wins), Long Run (2 wins), Silviniaco Conti (2 wins), Clan Des Obeaux (2 wins).
The latest horses to try and add their names to this roll of honour will be last year’s winner Bravemansgame and also the 2020 winner Frodon.
King George Chase Trends Tip 2023
Taking all the key King George Chase trends 2023 into account, the horse that ticks the most boxes is last year’s winner – BRAVEMANSGAME.
This 8 year-old has the key stats that include age, trainer, last run, recent run and being a past winner in his corner.
Okay, he’s actually not won a race since taking the King George 12 months ago (watch below), but this Paul Nicholls chaser has been runner up in the Cheltenham Gold Cup and run some solid races in defeat.
Many also feel that Kempton is his course – like so many past Nicholls runners – as it’s a track he’s 2-from-2 at and yet to lose a race. A return to the Sunbury-on Thames venue is a big plus as are all the main King George Chase trends in his favour.
