The King George betting has shaken up again as the Gordon Elliott-trained Gerri Colombe WON’T run in the big Boxing Day Kempton feature. Instead the 7 year-old will now head to the Savills Chase vs Gold Cup winner Galopin Des Champs at Leopardstown on December 28th.
Gerri Colombe To Bypass King George For Savills Chase
Trainer Gordon Elliott is yet to win the King George VI Chase at Kempton on Boxing Day and the County Meath handler isn’t going to win it this year either.
Elliott, who came close to King George glory in 2015 with Don Cossack, looked to have a great chance of breaking his Boxing Day duck with Gerri Colombe. However, despite the horse being the King George favourite with the best UK horse racing betting sites earlier this month, connections have been worried the Kempton ground won’t be soft enough and now have decided NOT to run in him.
Savills Chase Matchup With Galopin Des Champs The Target
With a mainly dry forecast, Gerri Colombe will not be sent over from Ireland, with the Savills Chase at Leopardstown on December 28th now the target and a cracking match-up with the Cheltenham Gold Cup winner Galopin Des Champs.
Gerri Colombe, who has won 5 of his 6 starts over fences, prefers to run on soft or heavy ground and the Kempton going update and weather report is saying conditions are currently ‘good-to-soft’ with no real rain due.
Trainer Gordon Elliott has won three of the last four Savills Chases, including last year with Conflated. While Willie Mullins’ last win in the Leopardstown Grade One was in 2018 with Kemboy.
Allaho Now The Clear King George Favourite
With the news that Gerri Colombe is a King George non-runner, the online betting sites have tightened up the Willie Mullins-trained Allaho in the market and this 9 year-old is looking the likely favourite come race day.
Allaho returned last month after 561-days off to win the Clonmel Oil Chase (watch below). And having won two Ryanair Chases at the Cheltenham Festival in the past will head to Kempton having won 8 of his 13 starts over fences.
He’ll also be looking to give Mullins a third King George after wins for Florida Pearl and Tornado Flyer in the past.
Last year’s King George winner Bravemansgame will run though, as he looks to win his first race since taking the Kempton price a year ago. He’s 2-from-2 at Kempton though so his backers are hoping a return to the Sunbury-on-Thames track will spark him back to winning ways.
Shishkin, Royale Pagaille, The Real Whacker, Hewick and the 2020 winner Frodon make up the eight King George runners left in at this stage.
