Tottenham captain Hugo Lloris has apologised to Spurs fans for his side’s shocking display in the ’embarrassing’ 6-1 defeat to Newcastle on Sunday afternoon.

Newcastle dominantly dispatched Tottenham on Sunday afternoon with a 6-1 scoreline after going 5-0 up in just 21 minutes.

Braces from Jacob Murphy and Alexander Isak, as well as a goal apiece for Joelinton and Callum Wilson ensured a mighty victory for the Magpies on Tyneside.

Harry Kane provided a solo effort for Spurs’ goal but failed to inspire any sort of fightback.

Pape Sarr was withdrawn after the fifth goal, and was replaced by Davinson Sanchez.

Hugo Lloris failed to re-emerge from the tunnel for the second-half after shipping five goals in the first 45, but it is now understood that this was due to an injury.

Following the full-time whistle, Lloris spoke to the media and apologised for his side’s calamitous display in the “embarrassing” defeat.

“It was very embarrassing. The first thing is we should apologise to the fans who travelled and who watched the game,” Lloris said on Sky Sports.

“We did not show a good face today. We could not match the performance of the Newcastle players, we were late in all aspects of the game.

“We completely missed the first part of the game. The second half is another story, but it is really painful today.

“We could not fight. It is difficult to analyse the performance, but the first thing was a lack of pride,” he continued.

“You can get punched once or twice and you concede, but on the pitch was something strange like we could not even react to bounce back into the game.

“We can try to find excuses, but we missed the fight. If you go on the pitch without the desire to win the battle, it makes things very hard. It was a bit of a mess.”
