Masters 2024 Prize Money
The total purse for the 2024 Masters stacks up to $18m, the majority of which is distributed between those who finish in the top three.
The prize money for the winner stands at $3.24m, which last year’s winner Jon Rahm received. There hasn’t been a back-to-back Masters winner in over two decades, but Rahm can expect to receive the same amount, should he win in consecutive years.
In 2022, Scottie Scheffler made $2.7m, meaning the prize money has risen to over $500k since his victory two years ago.
Meanwhile, the runner-up spot sees a total of $1.6m, whilst third place will earn $744k.
The rest of the money is distributed to the remainder of the leaderboard at Augusta, depending on placement.
The Prize Money History of the Masters
The Masters has come a long way since its introduction in 1934, and which is reflected in the astronomical rise of its total purse.
The total prize package back then stood at $5k – Horton Smith was the winner, taking the $1.5k prize money.
Not until 1961 did the tournament’s total purse crack $100,000. The winner that year was the great Gary Player, who made a respectable $20k for his triumph.
The Masters didn’t become a million dollar tournament until 1988, where Sandy Lyle took $153k as the winner that year.
Four years earlier, Ben Crenshaw became the first player to get paid over $100k for his win. The purse in 1984 stood around $388k, meaning that just four years later it received a $612k bump.
Tiger Woods made history in 2001, when he became the first player to win one million dollars. Since then, Woods has made almost $10m from the Masters in his 25 starts.
Who has made the most money from the Masters?
It’s tight between Woods and Phil Mickelson, but the latter leads with the most money made from the Masters.
Woods has made $9.6m but Mickelson has just edged him with a profit of $9.73m
However, Mickelson has made five more starts than Woods, so expect Mickelson to fall down the leaderboard when he eventually brings the curtain down on a long career.
Not that Woods needs the extra money, given he is the highest paid golfer of all-time as of 2024.
