Golf fans will be licking their lips this week as the biggest biannual event on the planet – the Ryder Cup – takes place at the Marco Simone Golf Course in Rome. But, as we head into the three-day team event – just how many times have USA won the Ryder Cup?

The USA Have Won The Ryder Cup 27 Times In The Past
You have to go back to 1927 to find the first ever golf Ryder Cup, which was staged at the Worcester Country Club in Massachusetts.
It was the USA Ryder Cup team that came out on top that day – beating a Great Britain team 9 1/2 to 2 1/2 – with just 12 points on offer back then.
However, the Great Britain side gained revenge on home soil at the Moortown Golf Cup in Yorkshire two years later in 1929. It was tit-for-tat for the next two Ryder Cups too – with USA winning in 1931 and Great Britain landing the cup in 1933 – meaning the first four events saw the spoils shared at two wins each.
But from 1935, the USA side went a dominate run that saw them capture the next seven Ryder Cups (home and away) and even though Great Britain stopped the rot in 1957, the USA team got back to winning ways by taking the next 12 in-a-row (one tied, but retained).
It’s been a bit more even since 1985, with the now-named Europe side winning seven of the last 10 Ryder Cups – but overall, since the first event back in 1927, it’s still the USA team that hold a commanding 27-14 (two ties) lead.
