In the first clash between a big six pairing in the 2023/24 Premier League season, Chelsea and Liverpool played out a 1-1 stalemate after a hectic first half at Stamford Bridge.

After both failed to earn a position in the Premier League top four last term, Chelsea and Liverpool turned to the transfer market in order to turn their fortunes around, and faced off against each other on the opening Super Sunday of the season.

Three summer signings were named in Mauricio Pochettino’s Blues lineup in the form of Robert Sanchez, Axel Disasi and Nicolas Jackson, whilst Dominik Szoboszlai and Alexis Mac Allister started for Jurgen Klopp’s side.

And it was a hectic start at Stamford Bridge too, with Liverpool taking the lead through Luis Diaz just a couple minutes shy of the 20 minute mark.

Just 13 minutes later, Mohamed Salah thought he doubled the Reds’ lead with his customary goal in the season opener, however he was ruled to be offside.

It didn’t take long for the home side to fight back from this point either, as summer signing Disasi headed home the leveller after 37 minutes.

Like Liverpool, Chelsea thought that they had a second just three minutes later, but Ben Chilwell was also ruled offside – seeing the sides enter the break with one apiece.

A frustrating second-half saw few clear cut chances for either side. Notably though, Salah was visibly unhappy at being substituted for youngster Harvey Elliott with just 13 minutes to spare – walking straight past Klopp towards the other substitutes.

Both sides held out despite a nervy ending, settling on a point apiece after the tie finished 1-1.

Up next for the Blues is a London derby against West Ham at the same time next week, whilst Liverpool host Bournemouth at 3pm next Saturday.
