Shaquille a Red-Hot Fancy Among Haydock Sprint Cup Runners

Listed winner on All-Weather at Lingfield races over winter when completing hat-trick, but not transferred that form to turf since. Best subsequent efforts in hitting the frame in York Group 2 during Dante Festival (fourth), the King’s Stand at Royal Ascot (third) and when denied a clear run in the Coral Charge Sprint Stakes at Sandown (fourth). Others appeal more.

2. Garrus

Won a Group 3 contest each season from 2021 and often campaigned in France. Successful return to action in the UK landing the Abernant at Newmarket races in April, then Greenlands Stakes fourth and two seconds across the Channel latest. Shapes as though will stay further after placing in Prix Maurice de Gheest last year. One of the Haydock Sprint Cup runners that could belie big odds.

3. Khaadem

Hold-up horse most effective on good to firm ground. Took form to a new level at Royal Ascot with Group 1 glory over this trip. Fifth in the July Cup, then dropped back in distance and seventh in the Nunthorpe latest. Extra furlong possibly what he wants now.

4. Regional

Unbeaten in two starts at the track. Third in last the Stewards’ Cup at Goodwood races last season, but Listed winner here this term in the Achilles Stakes after landing York handicap on reappearance. Outpaced fifth in the Nunthorpe latest and extra furlong will suit on pedigree. Definite each way claims from large field of Haydock Sprint Cup runners as yard in form.

5. Rohaan

Dual Group 3 and Heritage Handicap winner at Ascot races, and third in this race 12 months ago. Not able to match that form or Champions Sprint fourth last autumn since. Dropped 11lb in the weights throughout this season. Appears to be on the wane after those successes in Berkshire over previous two campaigns.

6. Run To Freedom

Two-time Listed winner at Windsor races last season and Salisbury this term. Although only ninth in the Jubilee at Royal Ascot, chased home Shaquille in the July Cup latest. Re-opposes off 4lb better terms. A repeat of that effort gives him every chance. Another of the Haydock Sprint Cup runners to consider each way.

7. Saint Lawrence

Career best efforts on last two starts. Listed 7f winner as a juvenile, then ended long losing run when landing Wokingham Stakes at Royal Ascot on penultimate outing. Excellent half-length third in Group 1 Prix Maurice de Gheest in France latest. In-form type who cannot be discounted.

8. Spycatcher

Largely consistent since gelding operation winning a Deauville Group 3 on his penultimate outing. Gallant short-head runner-up in the Prix Maurice de Gheest there latest.  Recent form achieved on softer ground. How he fares on quicker going at this level remains to be seen and not certain to line up among Haydock Sprint Cup runners despite declaration.

9. Mill Stream

Supplemented for £20,000. Gleneagles colt who has improved throughout the campaign. Not ready for the Group 2 Sandy Lane over course and distance on reappearance when distant sixth. Placed in handicaps at York races and Newmarket before Listed and Group 3 wins at Deauville in France latest. Has handled faster ground in the past, but recent form came with cut.

10. Rumstar

Group 3 winner as a juvenile last autumn and excellent fifth in the Jubilee at Royal Ascot this summer. Sixth in the Hackwood at Newbury races before unseating in the Stewards’ Cup during Glorious Goodwood latest. Only has merest glimmer of a chance and needs career best. Other Haydock Sprint Cup winners have plenty more going for them.

11. Shaquille

Unbeaten as a three-year-old, progressing from handicaps to land consecutive Group 1 races. Worrying tendency to start races slowly, but defied missing the break in both the Commonwealth Cup and July Cup latest. Tops official ratings and the one they all have to beat.

12. Shouldvebeenaring

Placed over course and distance in the Group 2 Sandy Lane after landing Listed event over 6f at Newmarket. Highly tried since, and well held by Shaquille and Lezoo back at HQ latest. Needs big step forward to be one of the Haydock Sprint Cup runners even hitting the frame.

13. The Antarctic

Naas Group 3 winner over this trip on penultimate outing. Failed to stay further when disappointing in the Jersey Stakes at Royal Ascot latest. Given a summer break to freshen up. Placed in Group 1s as a juvenile, but yet to replicate that form since. Others appeal more.

14. Sacred

Three-time Group winner over 7f who chased home Khaadem in the Jubilee Stakes at Royal Ascot this summer. Disappointing fifth in the City Of York Stakes latest. Strongly run race at this trip could suit. Likeable mare who is one of the Haydock Sprint Cup runners with claims.

15. Believing

Dual Listed winner at Chelmsford and Pontefract either side of Group 3 success in France. All of those victories came at this trip. Further progress is possible after being supplemented for this race by her syndicate connections at a cost of £20,000.

16. Lezoo

Very smart filly as a juvenile, but yet to reach those heights this season. Group 1 winner at Newmarket last autumn and returned there with Listed victory latest. Non-stayer in 1000 Guineas earlier in the year understandable, but poor 10th in Commonwealth Cup more difficult to excuse. Yard in superb form, so one of the Haydock Sprint Cup runners to consider.

17. Swingalong

Dual York Group winner over this trip including her latest success. Terrific two-length third in the Commonwealth Cup prior to that. Non-stayer earlier in the season over further, but well worth trying her at this level on recent form.

18. Happy Romance (Reserve)

Joint-lowest rated runner in the line-up. Mare with Listed success at Bath in the spring that has been highly tried throughout her career. Beaten a length into fourth in this race two years ago. Hasn’t really replicated that form since. The only one of the Haydock Sprint Cup runners not guaranteed to take her chance as she’s a reserve.
