Haydock Racing Trends: Saturday 10th June 2023
The ITV horse racing cameras head to Haydock Park this Saturday to take in five races, with the first of the LIVE action getting going at 1:15pm with the Listed Achilles Stakes – a race that the Mick Appleby-trained Raasel won 12 months ago and is back for more.
On the day we also see the newly named Lester Piggott Stakes (3pm) – the old Pinnacle Stakes – and with William Haggas, John Gosden and Roger Varian all having fair records in the contest it’s interesting the trio all have runners again this year.
Finally, the Group Three John Of Gaunt Stakes (3:35pm) will have added interested with the Aussie runner The Astrologist entered to run and with Ryan Moore also booked to ride is sure to be popular in the betting.
Haydock Racing Trends: Live ITV Racing Stats on Saturday 10th June 2023
1.15 – Sky Bet Achilles Stakes (Listed Race) Cl1 (3yo) 5f ITV4
Raasel won the race last year for the Mick Appleby yard and is back to defend his title but is drawn 1 this time – the last 10 winners came from stalls 2-10, with 9 of the last 13 between 2-7. With 12 of the last 13 winners NOT winning last time out, this would be a negative for Regional, while 92% of the last 13 winners were aged 5 or older which is not ideal for the younger horses in the race – Prince Of Pillo, Korker and Makarova.
Overall, it’s a race the old boy Equilateral @ 10/3 with 10bet ticks a lot of boxes from stall 10 and heads here having run a blinder last time out to be just a length off the useful Dramatised in the Temple Stakes over this course and distance. Clarendon House and Mondammej are others to note.
- 13/13 – Returned 14/1 or shorter
- 12/13 – Aged 5 or older
- 12/13 – Didn’t win last time out
- 12/13 – Had won over 5f before
- 10/13 – Had raced in the last 10 weeks
- 10/13 – Won between 6-8 times before
- 10/13 – Had finished in the top 5 last time out
- 9/13 – Drawn between stalls 2-7 (inc)
- 9/13 – Had run at the course before
- 9/13 – Winning distance 1 length or less
- 7/13 – Unplaced favourites
- 5/13 – Winning favourites
- 2/13 – Trained by William Haggas
- Raasel won the race in 2022
- The last 10 winners came between stalls 2-10
- The average winning SP in the last 9 runnings is 11/2
- Note: The 2020 running was staged at Doncaster
1.50 Sky Bet Reverence Handicap Cl3 (4yo+ 0-95) 6f ITV
Just the 5 previous runnings of this with Silver Samurai winning the race last year and returning. However, with all the winners aged 4 or 5 then this is a decent place to start and would be a big plus for All The King’s Men, Lethal Nymph, Lucky Man, Cooperation, Emperor Spirit, Nomadic Empire and Fools Rush In. We’ve also had the last five winners drawn in stalls 6 or higher, while 80% of the last 5 winners carried 9-2 or more in weight. Trainer David O’Meara has also won the race twice before.
Combining these stats, the Ryan Moore-ridden All The King’s Men @ 10/3 with 10bet has a lot in his favour from draw 9 and running consistently this season. While at a bigger price the O’Meara runner Nomadic Empire (e/w) @ 16/1 with 10bet could surprise having been dropped 3lbs for a recent run at York.
- 5/5 – Aged 4 or 5 years-old
- 5/5 – Drawn in stalls 6 or higher
- 4/5 – Carried 9-2 or more in weight
- 2/5 – Trained by David O’Meara
- 0/5 – Winning favourites
- Silver Samurai won the race last year
2.25 – Better Betting With Sky Bet Handicap Cl2 (4yo+ 0-105) 1m4f ITV
Not a lot to go on here based on the trends with just the one past running and last year’s winning handler, David and Nicola Barron, are not represented this year. The O’Meara and Loughnane yards don’t have the best of strike-rates with their 4+ years-olds here, so Get Shirty and Dark Pine have this to overcome. Cumulonimbus was a narrow neck winner at HQ last time but is up another 3lbs here.
A chance is taken on the Kevin Ryan runner Forza Orta (e/w) @ 8/1 with 10bet, who showed signs last time that he’s returning to form – beaten just over 3 lengths behind Scampi at York in a competitive handicap. Plus, Onesmoothoperator (e/w) @ 9/1 with 10bet is also on the shortlist after a 1 length second to Good Show last time at Hamilton but is double the price.
- 1 previous runnings
- Trainer David O’Meara is just 9 from 112 with this 4+ year-olds at the track
- Trainer David Loughnane is just 3 from 42 with this 4+ year-olds at the track

3.00 – Sky Bet Lester Piggott Stakes (Reg as the Pinnacle Stakes) (Group 3) Cl1 (4yo+) 1m3f ITV
This has been a good race for the Haggas, Varian and Gosden yards over the years and all three are represented again here with Sea Silk Road, Modaara and Mimikkyu. It’s also a race that we’ve seen 15 of the last 20 winners come from the top 3 in the betting, with the last 7 winners returning 4/1 or shorter.
The Ryan Moore-ridden Time Lock will be popular after a good second last time out, while with Frankie Dettori back in the saddle on Mimikyu will attract interest too. However, Modaara @ 9/4 with 10bet is the call despite needing to find more improvement on those mentioned. This Varian runner is lightly-raced though (3 runs) and was super-impressive when winning by 13 lengths last time at Kempton. Of course, this is a big step up but she’s a well-bred filly that connections clearly hold in high regard and of the 5 runners looks the one with the most scope to improve.

3.35 – Sky Bet John Of Gaunt Stakes (Group 3) Cl1 7f ITV
12 of the last 19 winners were placed in the top 3 last time out, drawn 3 or lower and aged 4 or 5 years-old. With these three Haydock trends combined Jumby @ 5/2 with 10bet gets the verdict for the Eve Johnson Houghton camp. Drawn 1, this 5 year-old was highly-tried in the Group One Lockinge at Newbury so back into a Group Three here will help – as will the drop back to 7f. The Aussie runner, the Astrologist will attract interest with Ryan Moore riding as this sprinter continues his Royal Ascot preparation, while The Wizard Of Eye and El Caballo can go well too.
