The Grand National weights 2024 have been revealed, with last year’s winner Corach Rambler rated 13lbs higher than 12 months ago. While the weights are currently topped by the King George VI Chase winner Hewick, with 11st 12lbs.
Grand National Weights 2024: Sees Last Year’s Winner Corach Rambler Handed 11st 2lbs
This year’s Aintree Grand National – the world’s greatest steeplechase – will be run on Saturday 13th April and if the 2023 winner Corach Rambler is going to win again, he’ll have to do so with another 11lbs on his back.
The Lucinda Russell-trained 10 year-old, who beat Vanillier by 2 1/4 lengths in the race 12 months ago (watch below), is now a 159-rated horse (13lbs higher than 2023) and with that the Grand National weights 2024 tell us he’ll have 11st 2lbs to carry this time.
Corach Rambler only had 10st 5lbs in the Aintree showcase race last year, while since 2016 all bar one Grand National winner carried 10st 13lbs or less.
If Corach Rambler can cope with the increased weight burden he’ll become only the second back-to-back Grand National winner since Red Rum in 1974. The other repeat winner was Tiger Roll in 2018 and 2018.
Before heading to Aintree though, Corach Rambler holds an entry in the Cheltenham Gold Cup on Friday March 15th.
Last Year’s Runner-up Vanillier Supported In Betting After Grand National Weights Released
In total only three different grey horses have won the Grand National over the years, but we almost saw another last year in Vanillier.
This Gavin Cromwell-trained 9 year-old finished just under 3-lengths behind the winner Corach Rambler and you feel the handicapper has given him a chance with just 2lbs more in weight.
As a result, the best UK horse racing betting sites have reacted by cutting his price and is now disputing the Grand National favourites berth with some firms.
2022 Grand National Winner Noble Yeats To Carry 11st 8lbs
The Grand National weights 2024 also tell us that we could see another past winner in Noble Yeats, who has been handed 11st 8lbs.
This Emmet Mullins runner is still only 9, as when winning at the age of 7 in 2022 become the first horse that young to win the National since 1940.
Noble Yeats won the race in 2022 carrying 10st 10lbs, while he was also fourth in 2023 with 11st 11lbs.
Since his famous win, Noble Yeats has been mixing it with the big boys in the staying chase division – including running fourth in the 2023 Cheltenham Gold Cup.
He’s since reverted to hurdles and won the Cleeve Hurdle at Cheltenham on Trials Day at the end of January and could be back to Prestbury Park in March for a tilt at the Stayers’ Hurdle (March 14th), before being Aintree bound.
The last Grand National horse to win back his crown was Red Rum, who won the race in 1973, 1974 and 1977.
When Were The 2024 Grand National Weights Announced?
The 2024 Grand National weights were announced on Tuesday 20th February at St George’s Hall, Liverpool at the annual weights lunch where the handicapper reveals the ratings for the remaining entries.
There will be many horses still to come out of the race with 87 still declared and a maximum of 34 runners allowed to race.
Each horse’s rating will now be set in stone, but regarding the actual weight carried for each horse, this could change slightly if the top-weight Hewick (11st 12lbs), who won this season’s King George VI Chase, doesn’t run.
What Is The Best Grand National Weights Trend?
Since Red Rum won in 1977 with 11st 8lbs on his back, only one horse (Many Clouds, 2015) has won the Grand National carrying more weight.
Six of the last seven winners had 10st 13lbs or less to carry, which works out at a 86% strike-rate during this period.
This means, when looking at the Grand National weights 2024 in full below, the horses numbered 1-to-18 will need to defy this 10st 13lbs or less weight trend.
Grand National Field Size Will See A Maximum Of 34 Runners in 2024
Also, don’t forget under the new Grand National safety rules, the maximum runners now stands at 34 – down from 40.
There will be several more declaration stages until the race on Saturday 13th April, with the final Grand National runners announced two days before on Thursday 11st April 2024.
The 2024 Grand National will also be shown at a new time (4pm) – moved from his 5:15pm slot in recent years.
