2023 Goodwood Cup Betting: Lone Eagle Backed For Day One Glory
Trainer Ralph Beckett went close in last Saturday’s King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes at Ascot, with Westover getting chinned on the line by Hukum, but he’ll be hoping for better luck in today’s Group One Goodwood Cup.
Beckett saddles the 5 year-old LONE EAGLE and overnight the best UK horse racing betting sites have cut his odds from 20/1 to 9/1.
The Marc Chan-owned stayer was last seen running 9th in the Ascot Gold Cup, but the horse was running well to lead a few furlongs out – only to not last out the 2m4f trip.
Therefore, horse racing punters are clearly in the thinking that the shorter trip today in the Goodwood Cup (2m) will suit Lone Eagle better, while prior to that run he was a fair second in the Ormonde Stakes at Chester (watch below).
He kept on well that day over 1m 5 1/2f to further back up that today’s trip of 2 miles could be spot-on for the Beckett runner, plus he’s also a proven course winner when taking the Coked Hat Listed Stakes in May 2021.
That course win also came with a bit of cut in the ground, so the recent rain at the West Sussex track to ease the underfoot conditions will be fine.

Courage Mon Ami Still Heads The Goodwood Cup Betting
Despite the support for Lone Eagle at the head of the Goodwood Cup betting market, the Frankie Dettori-ridden Courage Mon Ami remains solid at around 9/4 – full betting below.
Frankie steered home this John Gosden runner to win the Ascot Gold Cup in June – a win that gave the Italian his 9th success in the big Royal Ascot showpiece race (watch below).
Courage Mon Ami will come into today’s race unbeaten (4-from-4) and with this also being Frankie Dettori’s final ride in the race (retires at the end of this year) many horse racing punters are backing him to end with a fairytale win.
Frankie has won the Goodwood Cup five times in the past and needs just one more victory to become the winning-most jockey in the history of the race.
