Frankie Dettori will ride Emily Upjohn in Saturday’s 2023 King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes in what will be his final outing in the big Ascot race that he’s won a record-equalling seven times. The popular Italian jockey shares the spoils with a certain Lester Piggott, so can he end his King George journey with one more winner and overtake the man they called “The Long Fellow”?

Frankie Dettori Looks For King George Win Number Eight
The John and Thady Gosden-trained Emily Upjohn will have the honour of being the final ever (well, you never know) King George VI and Queen Elizabeth ride for Frankie Dettori.
Away from Frankie’s mount, Saturday’s showcase Ascot race has also attracted an A-list cast with this year’s Epsom Derby gold and silver medallists – Auguste Rodin and King Of Steel – in action, plus course specialists Hukum and last year’s winner Pyledriver, who Hayley Turner feels has a great chance.
However, a lot of the focus will be on Frankie Dettori’s King George ride on Emily Upjohn as it will not only be his last in the race that carries a £708,875 first prize – but the pocket Italian needs just one more success to overtake the legendary Lester Piggott.
Both Dettori and Piggott are locked on seven King George wins each, so one more success this Saturday for Frankie will see him dance off into the Ascot sunset (or rain) as the winning most jockey in the history of the race.

Emily Upjohn A Leading King George Fancy
Emily Upjohn has won 5 of her 8 career starts and wasn’t disgraced when running the improving Paddington to 1/2 a length in the Coral-Eclipse at Sandown Park earlier this month.
That effort came over 1m2f, but the return to 1m4f in the King George will be a plus for this Gosden filly, who prior to that Sandown effort landed the Epsom Coronation Cup in fine style – beating Westover by 1 3/4 lengths.
Being a mare, she’ll also get a handy 3lbs from the older colts and geldings in the race, while the last time she raced at Ascot she landed the Group One Champions Fillies and Mares Stakes last October.
Those against her might look to her poor run in the King George last season, when last of 6 and beaten 25 lengths. However, that clearly wasn’t her true running and has since bounced back in fine style.
Frankie Dettori has also won on her four times and with seven King George successes under his belt the pocket Italian will be looking to bow-out in the race with one final win.
