Jose Enrique has pointed the finger at Mohamed Salah and two of his Liverpool teammates, after the Reds were battered 5-2 by Real Madrid at Anfield last night.

Despite leading 2-0 in less than 15 minutes, Liverpool were battered 5-2 by Real Madrid in their last-16 Champions League tie at Anfield yesterday evening.

Darwin Nunez and Mohamed Salah netted for the Reds, before a first-half brace from Vinicius Junior and second-half goals from Karim Benzema and Eder Militao secured a mighty victory for Los Blancos.

Heavy criticisms for Jurgen Klopp’s side followed, with many questioning Liverpool’s defensive efforts – especially for Eder Militao’s goal.

Jose Enrique’s Comments

Former Reds defender Jose Enrique was one that publicly spoke out criticising some of Klopp’s players – singling out Mohamed Salah, Virgil van Dijk and Trent Alexander-Arnold.

“I don’t think it’s one problem, first of all, I think some of the players want everything, my honest opinion – the biggest one – is that they didn’t really buy the players that they needed. You cannot let Sadio Mane [go], then buy Darwin [Nunez] and [Cody] Gakpo – players that still need to be made in the Premier League, they’ve been OK, but they are not Mane.” Enrique said on talkSPORT.

“Salah as well, he looks off completely, [Virgil] van Dijk looks off completely, Trent [Alexander-Arnold] has been really bad this season as well. I’m not just pointing out these players because it’s been the whole team, but the truth is there are many world-class players in this team that have been performing that actually if he [Klopp] had options, he would bench them.”

Salah has struggled for the majority of the 2022/23 campaign, but has found form in recent weeks.

The Egyptian has racked up 19 goals and nine assists, an impressive tally for any player, but not what has become expected of Salah in recent years.

Enrique continued his critcism of the forward – even stating that Klopp should actively be searching for his replacement.

“Yesterday, Salah was really good, but I don’t know what’s been going on with him since he lost the final at the AFCON.

“He looks like another player completely, you just renewed his contract, you gave him one of the biggest salaries in the Premier League, and he’s another player.

“I actually believe that they should buy someone to actually really compete to take his place right now.”
