Former PSG sporting director Leonardo has claimed that it’s time for star forward Kylian Mbappe to leave the club amid reports linking him with a move away from the Parc des Princes.

Leonardo, formerly the sporting director of PSG on two occasions, has told his former club to sell Kylian Mbappe in an interview with L’Equipe.

The Brazilian is said to have been monitoring the deteriorating situation between the Parisiens and their star man, and says now is the time to cash in on the 24-year-old.

Real Madrid have long been heavily linked with the French international, with many reporting that the Spanish capital would be Mbappe’s preferred destination.

“For the good of PSG, I think the time has come for Mbappé to leave.” Leonardo told L’Equipe.

“Because of what he’s been through in the last two years, Mbappé has shown that he’s still not a player capable of guiding a team.

“He’s a great player and a great goalscorer, but not a leader. It’s hard to build a team around him.

“The club existed before he arrived and it will exist when he leaves. He has been in Paris for six years and at five different clubs they’ve won the European Cup… and none of them had Mbappé. That means it’s totally possible to be champion without him.”

Mbappe has just one-year remaining on his contract at the Parc des Princes, with reports claiming that he will run out his contract in order to join Los Blancos on a free transfer.

It is reported that PSG don’t want this however, and would prefer to sell the forward this summer in order to garner a fee for his exit.

The 2018 World Cup winner further added fuel to the fire last week after publicly criticising his employers in an interview.

“We are in a consumer society, where ‘it’s good, but do it again’. And the fact that I’m right next door, in Paris… I think playing at PSG doesn’t help much because it’s a divisive team, a divisive club. So, of course it attracts gossip but it doesn’t bother me because I know what I’m doing and how I do it.” Mbappe told France Football.

PSG are reportedly demanding upwards of £171million for his signature, and with interest from both Real Madrid and Liverpool – it’s a transfer saga well worth keeping an eye on.
