Everton are bracing for their first relegation since 1951 following a winless start to the 2023/24 Premier League campaign, including three defeats and today’s draw against newly-promoted Sheffield United.

The Toffees have now failed to win in their opening four games of the season, losing three on the bounce against Fulham, Aston Villa and Wolves before picking up a first point of the season this afternoon in Sheffield.

Abdoulaye Doucoure opened the scoring for the visitors after 14 minutes at Bramall Lane, marking their first goal of the campaign almost a month in. It took six hours and three minutes of football for Sean Dyche’s side to find the net.

Cameron Archer equalised for the Blades on his debut before United took the lead on the stroke of half time. It was a shot from Archer again, which ricocheted off the post and hit the back of Jordan Pickford in the unluckiest of scenarios.

Arnaut Danjuma levelled the scores ten minutes after the restart for his first Everton goal thanks to a delightful delivery from Nathan Patterson, which proved to be the final goal of the encounter in a four goal thriller to kick off Saturday’s card of fixtures.

Pickford was the hero in the dying embers, producing an unbelievable double save in the 98th minute to ensure the travelling side left with a hard-earned point for their efforts.

According to Premier League betting sites, Everton’s odds to be relegated are now 6/4. After a tricky number of years in which they narrowly escaped the drop twice, Everton may not be able to escape their fate this time around.

Everton have never been relegated from the Premier League since its introduction in 1992 and have only dropped out of the top-flight twice in the club’s history, in the 1929/30 and 1950/51 seasons.

The Toffees bounced back to the first division in 1954/55 where they have remained ever since. They could be waiting even longer for their first win of the season with Arsenal and Brentford next up on the calendar.

Many thought Dyche had performed a miracle to guide the club to safety last season and following a mediocre transfer window which included the sale of Alex Iwobi to Fulham, the writing could be on the wall for the Merseyside outfit.
