With 52 goals this season Erling Haaland has breezed past most of his opponents, but ahead of the Champions League final the striker told BT Sport who has been the most difficult to get past this year.

Haaland was quizzed by former United defender Rio Ferdinand ahead of City’s Champions League final tomorrow and the deadly striker spoke very highly of Virgil Van Dijk.

When Ferdinand asked who had been the difficult to get past this season, Haaland brought up his own teammates as well as Liverpool’s Van Dijk.

“The most difficult, we struggled at Anfield I remember. Van Dijk, I always said it, I think he’s so good. But the good thing also about it is I’m meeting Ruben Dias, Akanji, Ake in training every single day. Training is not easy.

“But Van Dijk, I like him a lot. He’s smart, fast, and in the air, he’s just unreal as well.”

Haaland played against Liverpool three times this season and he was on the losing side on two occasions, with Van Dijk playing in all three.

The Norwegian did inevitably score against Liverpool in one of their matches this season, but he was only able to net when Van Dijk wasn’t on the pitch in the EFL Cup Round of 16.

Although Haaland respects Van Dijk as the toughest opponent he has faced this season, he struggled in the Premier League this season as Liverpool missed out on Champions League football.

Haaland will have the chance to win the treble with Manchester City this weekend in his debut season and it is no surprise that City are odds on favourites for the final with most bookmakers.
