Dimitar Berbatov Optimistic About Cristiano Ronaldo’s Prolonged Playing Career

Dimitar Berbatov believes that former teammate Cristiano Ronaldo can continue playing until he’s at least 41 years old.

Ronaldo, despite being 38, has displayed little signs of slowing down. He scored two goals for Portugal in their 3-2 victory over Slovakia, securing their place in the European Championship in Germany next year. At club level, Ronaldo has been in exceptional form for Al-Nassr, netting 17 goals in as many matches.

His goals this calendar year see him lead the likes of Erling Haaland, Kylian Mbappe and Harry Kane as 2023’s top goalscorer.

Berbatov explained his perspective to Betfair, saying, “Ronaldo will stop when he wants to stop. When you look after yourself the way he has, have the team around you that he does, the chances of playing football for longer than expected gets bigger.

“In Cristiano’s case, I think he has the chance to play for another two or three years. People will say that he’s playing in a slower league that’s not as good as the Premier League but it doesn’t matter. He’s still proving that he’s going strong, especially recently with his performances and goals for Portugal.”

The former Tottenham and Man United striker continued to explain that whilst Ronaldo’s last tournament will come one day, we should enjoy watching him while we can.

Reports suggest that Ronaldo wishes to continue playing for Al-Nassr until 2027, potentially aiming for a final World Cup appearance at the 2026 tournament, held in Canada, Mexico, and the United States. He has set himself the ambitious goal of reaching 1,000 career goals before retirement, currently holding 857. If he maintains his current rate, he might achieve this impressive milestone.

Ronaldo is set to return to action with Al-Nassr on Saturday when they face Damac in the Saudi Pro League.
