As we hot-foot into series 16 of the popular ITV Sunday night ice skating show, here at SportsLens we look back at ALL the Dancing On Ice winners over the years between 2006 and 2023. From the very first winner Gaynor Faye to last year’s victor Nile Wilson.

Dancing On Ice Returns For Series 16 In 2024

Ice Skating fans will be looking forward to the next instalment of the big ITV hit show Dancing On Ice, that has ‘frozen out’ all the other Sunday early evening shows since 2006.

Dancing On Ice will be entering series 16 this month, with twelve more celebrities being paired up with ice skating pros in an attempt to win over the British public and more importantly the judges – Jayne Torvill, Christopher Dean, Ashley Banjo and Oti Mabuse.

There is also a mini-presenting shake-up this year on Dancing On Ice with Philip Schofield no longer attached to ITV.

He’s replaced by the Mr ITV reliable Stephen Mulhern and joins show stalwart and ‘ice queen’ Holly Willoughby, who is back in front of the cameras for the first time since the ‘Schofield Saga’ last year.

Mulhern is also no stranger to the show, having guest presented on it in series 14.

You can see the full list of 2024 Dancing On Ice celebrities below, with the likes of ex-long jumper Greg Rutherford, former boxer Ricky Hatton and well-known ski jumper Eddie The Eagle just three of the stars taking to the ice rink.

The first Dancing On Ice will be aired on Sunday 14th January at 6:30pm, with the show on each Sunday until the middle of March.

Actress Gaynor Faye Won The First Ever Dancing On Ice In 2006

Former Coronation Street actress Gaynor Faye cemented herself in the Dancing On Ice history books by winning the first ever show back in 2006.

The show was originally titled ‘Stars On Thin Ice’ but was renamed in a bid to compete with BBC’s Strictly Come Dancing.

It was allocated a cautious January slot to test the water, but Dancing On Ice shocked TV executives to become the third highest rated TV show in 2006, with over 13 million viewers glued to the ice action until the March Final.

Torvill and Dean, who are still involved with the show, were there from the start. With Philip Schofield and Holly Willoughby – another Dancing On Ice veteran that’s stood the test of time – doing the first ever presenting.

Faye was guided through the first Dancing On Ice show by pro Daniel Whiston – an English ice skater, who started first stepped onto a rink aged just seven.

Whiston also went onto win Dancing On Ice with Hayley Tamaddon (2010) and Beth Tweddle (2013) – while with these three wins, remains the most successful male pro skater the show has seen to date.

In fact, only four female celebrity skaters have won Dancing On Ice and Whiston has been responsible for three of them!

Who Won Last Year’s Dancing On Ice (2023)?

Gymnast Nile Wilson won Dancing On Ice 2023, so as we head into the 2024 series the former Olympic bronze medallist is the current champ.

Wilson was partnered in 2023 by Olivia Smart, who is a British-Spanish pro ice skater and three-time national champion in Spain. Smart was winning Dancing On Ice for the first time.

The pair beat off Joey Essex and Vanessa Bauer to lift the 2023 Dancing On Ice title.

Only FOUR Female Celebrities Have Won Dancing On Ice

With Dancing On Ice first broadcast in 2006, ice skating fans have now seen fifteen past champions.

However, the interesting stat that has developed over the years is that the show has only produced FOUR female celebrity skating winners.

The four ‘ice queens’ since 2006 are – Gaynor Faye (2006), Suzanne Shaw (2008), Hayley Tamaddon (2010) and Beth Tweddle (2013).

Meaning we’ve also seen a massive eleven male winners – which works out at a 73% strike-rate.

Of course, you can flip this male/female thing on its head and also argue that 11 of the last 15 Dancing On Ice winners have been won by a female pro ice skater too. While only for pro man have guided their female celebs to victory.

The Last Seven Dancing On Ice Winners Were Men (or women if you count the pro skaters!)

Three of the first five Dancing On Ice winners were ladies – Gaynor Faye, Suzzane Shaw and Hayley Tamaddon. However, since then only Beth Tweddle (2013) has flown the ‘female flag’.

So, the last SEVEN celebrity winners of Dancing On Ice have ALL been male. Ray Quinn, Jake Quickenden, James Jordan, Joe Swash, Sonny Jay, Regan Gascoigne and Nile Wilson.

Pro Ice Skater Vanessa Bauer Has A Fanstastic Dancing On Ice Record

When looking at the 2024 pro ice skaters, then Vanessa Bauer has made the show her own since 2018 with a stagging five top-two finishes.

She helped former X Factor signer Jake Quickenden win in 2018 and despite this being Bauer’s only Dancing On Ice title, the German-born skater has since picked up four silver medals too.

The most recent being her runner-up finish in 2023 with Joey Essex (watch below).

Vanessa Bauer will partner Made In Chelsea star Miles Nazaire in 2024 as she looks to add to her fantastic Dancing On Ice record.
