Frankie Dettori has done it again. The pocket Italian is no stranger to writing his own headlines and in what is his final year riding and his last Royal Ascot – he’s only gone and won the Gold Cup.
Courage Mon Ami Gives Frankie A Fairytale Ninth Ascot Gold Cup Win
Hindsight is a wonderful thing, but really, let’s be honest, of course Frankie Dettori was going to win the Ascot Gold Cup in what was his final ride in the race. This is exactly the kind of thing he’s been doing his entire career.
The popular 52 year-old jockey has taken the sport of horse racing to new levels over the last 30 years and in the modern era there is arguably no bigger player.
He been responsible for many headlines (good and bad) over the years, with one of the highs, of course, his ‘magnificent 7’ wins at Ascot back in 1996 at a non-Royal meeting.
While, since grabbing his first Royal Ascot win 1990, he’s racked up 79 winners (and counting) with the most recent of those in the biggest race at the meeting this Thursday – the Ascot Gold Cup.
Dettori has also been top rider at Royal Ascot 7 times.
Dettori Was Riding In His Last Ever Gold Cup
Frankie, who is retiring from the saddle at the end of this year, is riding in his last ever Royal Ascot and having already won the Queen’s Vase on Wednesday with Gregory managed to win the ‘big one’ – the Gold Cup on Thursday. A race he’s won now 9 times!
It was his old pal John Gosden, who has already provided Frankie with three Gold Cups on Stradivarius, that jocked him up on the lightly-raced COURAGE MON AMI.
The horse, who is still unbeaten from 4 runs, was sent off as 15/2 and despite those odds would have had a weight of Frankie punters backing him both on the track and off course. It looked like the favourite Coltrane was going to win after taking it up with a few furlongs to go, but Frankie’s horse lived up to its name to show plenty of ‘courage’ to battle past the long-time leader and win by 3/4 of a length.
Has there been a more lightly-raced Ascot Gold Cup winner? With just three previous runs, probably not.
The famous Frankie ‘flying dismount’ followed to the backdrop of the loudest cheer the Ascot track has heard in decades. For racegoers, it really was a “I was there” moment and one that is now cemeted in the Royal Ascot history books forever.
With 9 Gold Cup wins you’d also think that Frankie would be the all-time winning jockey in the race – wrong. This title in goes to a certain Lester Piggott (11 wins), who wasn’t a bad jockey either.
Maybe Frankie will come out of retirement to try and bag three more Gold Cups to take the title – here’s hoping!
🏆 @FrankieDettori WINS HIS FINAL EVER GOLD CUP!
