Former Celtic and England striker Chris Sutton has backed ‘under pressure’ Newcastle to drop points against Brighton this evening, as Liverpool remain hot on their tails in the race for Champions League qualification.

Thursday evening sees a major clash in the race for European football, as Newcastle host Brighton at St. James’ Park.

The Magpies, who sit in third, are looking to secure Champions League qualification for next term.

Brighton look unlikely to break into the top four as they sit in sixth place, but they’ll be looking to ensure Europa League qualification.

Fourth place Manchester United are level on points with Newcastle, whilst Liverpool, who have played one game more, remain just a point behind Eddie Howe’s side.

This has put enormous pressure on both Newcastle and the Red Devils as Jurgen Klopp’s side have now won seven successive matches in the Premier League.

Former England forward Chris Sutton delivered his prediction for tonight’s clash in his BBC Sport column.

“This game could be anything really – Brighton’s last two results have seen them lose 5-1 at home to Everton and then go to Arsenal and beat them 3-0, but they are always so good to watch.” Sutton said.

“The Seagulls are going for a Europa League spot while Newcastle are trying to get over the line in the race for the top four.

“Liverpool’s winning run has put the Magpies under a bit of pressure but they are usually pretty good at home – they lost to Arsenal last time they played at St James’ Park but that was only their second home defeat of the season and I don’t see them being beaten again here.

“It should be a really good game. Newcastle play on the front foot and Brighton love playing teams who come at them, so I can see there being plenty of chances and a few goals.

“It certainly won’t be a repeat of the 0-0 scoreline when these two teams met in August.”

Chris Sutton’s Prediction: Newcastle 3-3 Brighton @ 40/1
