2023 Cheltenham Festival Bankers or Blowouts on Day Four: Fri 17th March
More Cheltenham Festival bankers on day four – Friday 17th March, as horse racing punters hunt out the best-backed horses to put in their doubles, trebles and accas. However, which of the Cheltenham day four horses have the best chance of winning and which runners might be worth taking on?
1.30: JCB Triumph Hurdle ITV1 – LOSSIEMOUTH –Â @ 2/1
This Willie Mullins runner wasn’t given the best of rides the last day in the Spring Juvenile Hurdle (2nd). Paul Townend kept meeting trouble and Lossiemouth just had too much to do, with the eventual winner – Gala Marceau – getting first run. She’s back to try and put that right as prior to that run had won all three starts. Owner Rich Ricci also took this race last year, while Willie Mullins has won 2 of the last three. She’ll face a big test from two other Mullins runners – Blood Destiny and Gala Mareau – but gets a handy 7lbs mares’ allowance here which will help. VERDICT: BANKER
3.30: Boodles Cheltenham Gold Cup Chase ITV1 – GALOPIN DES CHAMPS –Â @ 7/4
Galopin Des Champs had the Turners’ Novices’ Chase in the bag last season, until falling at the last. But this Willie Mullins runner has bounced back to win all three starts since. He’s been all the rage as the Gold Cup favourite since and was impressive last time when winning the Irish Gold Cup. He’ll be looking to give Mullins his third Gold Cup in the last five years. He’s taking on some fair sorts that including last year’s winner A Plus Tard and the 2022 Grand National winner Noble Yeats. But, at just 7 years-old looks the sort to still have more to come and can make up for last year’s heartbreak here. VERDICT: BANKER

4.10: St. James’s Place Festival Challenge Cup Open Hunters’ Chase ITV1 – VAUCELET @ 9/4
Vaucelet has been popular in the betting for the Hunters’ Chase – the race after the Gold Cup – most of the season. This 8 year-old has won 6 of his 8 chase starts – including his last three. The most recent came on Boxing Day at Down Royal, but he only scrapped home by a neck that day. He’ll also be taking on last year’s winner Billaway and a stack of other useful Hunter Chasers, so despite looking a worthy favourite also doesn’t look great value. VERDICT: BLOWOUT
4.50: Mares’ Chase RTV – ALLEGORIE DE VASSY @ 6/4
It was a bit of a ‘coin-flick’ on which horse to feature here, as we could fav joint favourites in this race. The JP McManus-owned Impervious is the other big player in the race and it should be a fascinating head-to-head. However, the one that can have the better ‘Girl Power’ in this Mares’ Chase is Allegorie De Vassy. Owned by Rich Ricci and trained by Willie Mullins, this mare is 2-from-2 over fences – winning both starts by 19 lengths! We know she stays further too, having won over 2m6 1/2f and that proven stamina will be a big plus. VERDICT: BANKER
