Constitution Hill Wins Champion Hurdle By Nine Lengths Leaving Punters Furious
The fourth race of the 2023 Cheltenham Festival on Tuesday 14th March saw heavy favourite Constitution Hill romp home by nine lengths in the Champion Hurdle with ease. An emphatic Cheltenham result.
He was one of the standout horses running on Day 1, and was priced at around 4/11 with the best horse racing betting sites. He kept up his perfect record with a sixth straight victory over hurdles earlier this afternoon.
However, some racing fans were left furious after backing the 6-year-old to win by 10 lengths or more. Sky Bet were offering a 3/1 boost on Constitution Hill to win by 10+ lengths in the Champion Hurdle, which resulted in the gelding falling just one length short of this mark.
Considering how easy it was for Constitution Hill, horse racing punters were left frustrated at the fact he didn’t win by one more length. That’s not to take away from the fact that the Willie Mullin’s superstar horse put on an incredible performance in winning the Champion Hurdle.

What Is A Length In Horse Racing and How Is It Judged?
According to the British Horseracing Authority, a length is a measurement of elapsed time as the horses cross the line and can vary on the size of the horse and its stride pattern, but in general would be about 8 to 9 feet.
It is the approximate length of a horse from nose to tail. A length is a commonly used phrase in thoroughbred horse racing, describing the distance between horses in a race.
In this instance, the Cheltenham Champion Hurdle winning distance was nine lengths for Constitution Hill. This means that he won the race by roughly 72-80 feet.
More often, winning distances are merely a fraction of a length, such as half a length. In British horse racing, the distances between horses are calculated by converting the time between them into lengths by a scale of lengths-per-second.
The actual number of lengths-per-second varies according to the type of race and the going conditions. For example, in a flat turf race run on good going, a value of six lengths-per-second is used; in a national hunt race on heavy going, where horses are assumed to be moving more slowly, the value is four lengths-per-second.
So, Constitution Hill’s nine length victory in the Champion Hurdle on Day 1 of the 2023 Cheltenham Festival, going by the lengths-per-second ratio, Willie Mullins 6-year-old won by between two or three seconds. Constitution Hill’s Cheltenham Champion Hurdle winning distance was officially nine lengths.
