Chelsea remain Romeo Lavia’s number one choice this summer, despite a Liverpool making a £60m approach to Southampton today.

Liverpool and Chelsea have already battled it out for Moises Caicedo this summer, who appears to have chosen a move to London rather than to Liverpool with a record deal all but confirmed.

It looks like the Reds might be getting snubbed by another world class midfielder this week, as Southampton’s Romeo Lavia would reportedly prefer to become a Blue this season.

Liverpool have submit a £60m bid for the Southampton star today, but Chelsea remain in pole position to sign Lavia according to reports.

It could be Lavia’s relationship with Chelsea’s co-director of recruitment, Joe Shields, that gets the move over the line, as he was the one who brought the Belgian to Southampton for his breakthrough season.

The Reds are in desperate need of a defensive midfielder before the window closes at the end of August, which was highlighted during their first Premier League game of the season against Chelsea.

The match finished 1-1 but it was clear to see Liverpool lacked a holding midfielder as Jurgen Klopp started Alexis Mac Allister, Dominik Szoboszlai and Cody Gakpo as an extremely forward thinking trio.

Mac Allister is expected to play in a much more advanced role than he did against Chelsea, but the new signing from Brighton was forced to play a deeper role with the absence of a defensive midfielder clear.

Southampton kicked off their Championship campaign with four points from their opening two matches, but Lavia was nowhere to be seen as his exit is expected to be announced soon.
