Chelsea have reportedly made contact with former Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino as the club steps up their pursuit of a permanent managerial appointment following Graham Potter’s sacking.

According to The Telegraph’s Matt Law, Chelsea have cut their shortlist of hopeful appointments with former Barcelona and Spain gaffer Luis Enrique no longer a favourite to take the job at Stamford Bridge.

Instead, the Blues have made contact with Mauricio Pochettino who has been out of a job since being sacked by PSG last year. The Argentine was interviewed by Chelsea before the appointment of Graham Potter and impressed co-owners Todd Boehly and Behdad Eghbali.

Luis Enrique flew to London two weeks ago for talks with Chelsea but there are none further planned, leaving a straight path for the Spaniard to battle alongside Vincent Kompany and Brendan Rodgers for the vacant Spurs job.

Despite the cooled interest, Enrique remains 3/1 to be the Chelsea manager for the first game of next season’s campaign according to Premier League betting sites but trails Pochettino and former Bayern Munich manager Julian Nagelsmann in the race.

Pochettino has proven experience in England’s top flight after joining Chelsea’s local rivals Spurs in 2014 after a successful spell at Southampton. The 51-year-old led the north London club to a runner-up finish in the league six years ago.

He also guided Tottenham to a Champions League final appearance final in 2019 despite receiving no financial backing the previous summer, where they lost 2-0 to Liverpool in Madrid.

The readily available resources and funds at Chelsea would present a new challenge to Pochettino in England, having spent over £500 million on transfers since the takeover in May 2022.
