Former Liverpool and Chelsea striker Daniel Sturridge has claimed that Blues summer arrival Nicolas Jackson is like a ‘hybrid of Balotelli and Drogba’ ahead of his two former clubs facing off at Stamford Bridge.

Ahead of Chelsea versus Liverpool on the opening Sunday of the 2023/24 Premier League season, ex-Reds and Blues striker Daniel Sturridge has pinpointed Nicolas Jackson as ‘a very good signing’ for the home side.

Jackson, who almost joined Bournemouth in January, arrived at Chelsea from Villarreal in the summer on an eight-year contract.

The Senegalese international has massively impressed in pre-season, scoring twice and assisting thrice whilst forming a deadly partnership with fellow summer arrival Christopher Nkunku.

Of course, Nkunku suffered a knee injury in the Blues’ final pre-season outing against Borussia Dortmund, leaving him sidelined for the next 16 weeks or so, therefore a lot of pressure will be placed on Jackson to perform in front of goal.

Speaking on Sky Sports ahead of Sunday’s fixtures between Brentford and Tottenham, and Chelsea and Liverpool, Sturridge likened the 22-year-old to a hybrid of Mario Balotelli and Didier Drogba.

“The signing of Nicholas Jackson is a very good signing for me.” he said.

“I liken his style to a hybrid of a young Balotelli with the presence, the skills and the strength, then Didier [Drogba].

“He doesn’t have as powerful a shot as those two players, but his abilities are things that players of his height and stature aren’t used to having.

“His abilities on the ball, to manipulate it, to create problems for defenders, he’s very mobile, makes very good run, makes runs in between the two centre halves and he has blistering pace.

“When he runs through, it’s very difficult to catch him so I’m excited to see him today.”
