Many observers will likely tread with caution when approaching their predictions for this one.

This third round cup tie pits a winless Bournemouth side, who sit 17th in the Premier League, against a Stoke City side who are wollowing near the foot of the table themselves – currently two points off the Championship relegation zone.

These is plenty of recent history between these two, with Bournemouth winning the previous two meetings before securing promotion back to the top flight two seasons ago.

Both Bournemouth and Stoke are among the lowest scorers in their respective leagues, with Wednesday’s hosts finding the net just five times in six games (joint-third least), while the Potters have scored eight in as many Championship games (also joint-third least).

While cup competitions represent entirely different conditions – as evidenced by Stoke’s 6-1 rout against Rotherham in the second round – we can’t envisage a high scoring affair here given the lack of inspiration both sides have displayed this term.

For all Stoke’s transgressions this season, their fans will take a slither of comfort in their positive showings in the Carabao Cup so far, beating West Brom and latterly Rotherham, as mentioned.
