Benter began counting cards at the Las Vegas blackjack tables. After discovering a book by Edward O. Thorp entitled Beat The Dealer, he continued to hone his abilities.

Seven years later, he was banned from every casino on the Vegas strip.

Benter then met a like-minded gambler in Alan Woods, who also had an expertise on horse racing and computers.

The pair became partners, moving to Hong Kong in 1984. They began with $150,000 and used their mathematical skills to create a race-winning formula.

Their statistical model was quickly refined, winning them $600,000 in 1988. A year later, they would make $3 million in profits.

In March 2010, Benter married wife Vivian Fung, a Hong Kong national. They had their first child in 2015, and currently reside in Pittsburgh.

Benter founded the Benter Foundation in 2007, focused on local education and the arts in Pittsburgh.

He was also listed as a donor to Barack Obama’s 2008 presidential campaign, as well as the Democratic Party of Virginia.
