The Ascot Gold Cup runners 2023 are starting to take shape ahead of the June 22nd race, but in a more open-looking affair than recent years we’ve two horses – Coltrane and Eldar Eldarov – disputing the favourites berth at the head of the Ascot Gold Cup betting market.

Ascot Gold Cup Runners 2023: Who Will Go Off Favourite – Coltrane or Eldar Eldarov?
The Ascot Gold Cup is always the feature race on Ladies Day (Thursday, 22nd June) each year, while to many it’s the main event of all the 35 Royal Ascot races over the five-day festival.
Run over a trip of 2m4f and being a Group One, the race requires the winner to have a mixture of both class and stamina to get the job done. Over the years it’s also been a kind race to both trainer Aidan O’Brien and jockey Frankie Dettori, who both have 8 wins each in the day three showcase event.
As mentioned, the 2023 Ascot Gold Cup looks a much more open-affair than in recent years and that is reflected in the market with two runners battling it out for the favourites berth – Coltrane and Eldar Eldarov. There are also fair chances in Emily Dickinson, Broome, Yibir, Courage Mon Ami and the 2021 winner Subjectivist lurking just behind that pair in the betting.
Let’s take a look at the main Ascot Gold Cup 2023 players.

ELDAR ELDAROV @ 4/1
Trainer: Roger Varian
Jockey: David Egan
Age: 4
Recent Flat Form: 1417-2
Last Race: 2nd Yorkshire Cup (York)
Last year’s St Leger winner is another big fancy for the Ascot Gold Cup and should be spot-on for this after a close second in the Yorkshire Cup last time out. The trip is the big unknown as the furthest he’s gone to date is 2m and that ended in down the field run in the Long Distance Cup here at Ascot last October. On a plus, he’s a 4 year-old and they’ve dominated in recent times – winning 8 of the last 11.
COLTRANE @ 10/3
Trainer: Andrew Balding
Jockey: Oisin Murphy
Age: 6
Recent Flat Form: 4212-1
Last Race: 1st Sagaro Stakes (Ascot)
Winner of the Ascot Stakes at this meeting last year and has improved 19lbs since that win. Returned this season with an easy win in the Sagaro Stakes here at Ascot in early May and has been high up in the betting for this since. We know he stays, likes the track and at the age of 6 should be peaking just about now.
COURAGE MON AMI @ 13/2
Trainer: John & Thady Gosden
Jockey: Frankie Dettori
Age: 4
Recent Flat Form: 11-1
Last Race: 1st Handicap (Goodwood)
Could be the ride of Frankie Dettori in what will be his final Gold Cup as this 4 year-old is trained by John Gosden who has won this prize three times in the past – all with Frankie riding. This Frankel gelding has only been on the track three times, so experience will not be a positive for him, but on a plus is lesser exposed than most. Is certainly worth a crack at the trip though – having won well over 1m6f last time at Goodwood, so can he give Frankie a fairytale final ride in this day three feature? The horse was recently sold by A E Oppenheimer and will now run for Wathnan Racing.
EMILY DICKINSON @ 15/2
Trainer: Aidan O’Brien
Jockey: Ryan Moore
Age: 4
Recent Flat Form: 461-16
Last Race: 6th Saval Beg Levmos Stakes (Leopardstown)
From the all-powerful Aidan O’Brien yard that have won the Ascot Gold Cup 8 times over the years. This 4 year-old filly looks another typical O’Brien horse for this race and recent runs, when looking one-paced, suggesting she’s been crying out for a longer trip. Expected to the be ride of Ryan Moore too, who has won this race three times in the past – including last year for O’Brien.
BROOME @ 14/1
Trainer: Aidan O’Brien
Jockey: Wayne Lordan
Age: 7
Recent Flat Form: 68-513
Last Race: 3rd Yorkshire Cup (York)
Another possible Ascot Gold Cup runner for Aidan O’Brien and has Royal Ascot-winning form after landing the Hardwicke Stakes last year. That win came over just 1m4f though so is another that is stepping up in trip, but on a plus has won over 2m before (Meydan). Last seen running a close third in the Yorkshire Cup, so is linked in with Eldar Eldarov (2nd). The big negative though is his age (7) as since 1994, all bar two winners have been aged 6 or younger.

SUBJECTIVIST @ 9/1
Trainer: Charlie Johnston
Jockey: Joe Fanning
Age: 6
Recent Flat Form: /11/03
Last Race: 3rd Dubai Gold Cup (Meydan)
Won this race in 2021 and if able to wrestle back his crown would become the first horse since Kayf Tara to do so. We know this Charlie Johnston runner stays and with the yard in cracking form coming into the meeting, can’t be ruled out. Is still also only 6 years-old and having had a few training setbacks since winning this in 2021 has only raced twice since.
YIBIR @ 12/1
Trainer: Charlie Appleby
Jockey: William Buick
Age: 5
Recent Flat Form: 2231-4
Last Race: 4th Al Rayyan Stakes (Newbury)
From the ‘boys in blue’ of Godolphin and they will be looking for their sixth Ascot Gold Cup win here. However, the big unknown with Yibir is the trip and lasting out. Stamina hasn’t really been tested to date, with the furthest he’s gone so far being just 1m5f. Last seen running 4th in the Al Rayyan Stakes at Newbury and will be better for that as it came off a 317-day break.
ECHOES IN RAIN @ 14/1
Trainer: Willie Mullins
Jockey: Tom Marquand
Age: 7
Recent Flat Form: 1/212
Last Race: 1st Mares Champion Hurdle (Punchestown)
A Royal Ascot runner for trainer Willie Mullins and this is a race the Irish champion jumps trainer would love to win. Mullins has won the Ascot Stakes and Queen Alexandra Stakes at the meeting before – two races over the extreme trips too, but this is the one he’d like. Echoes In Rain has a squeak too, in what is an open-looking year for this race. Comes here having won 2 of her last three races over hurdles and is rated 10lbs higher over hurdles than Burning Victory, who was a close 4th in the race for Mullins last year.
TRUESHAN @ 22/1
Trainer: Alan King
Jockey: Hollie Doyle
Age: 7
Recent Flat Form: 321-24
Last Race: 4th Sagaro Stakes (Ascot)
Has been touted for this race many times in the past but hasn’t manged to get to the contest (or even Royal Ascot) as he likes a bit more cut underfoot and conditions at this meeting are often on the faster side. Therefore, would be having his debut at this meeting, but is also on a bit of a recovery mission after being beaten at Evs to Coltrane last time in the Sagaro Stakes at Ascot. So, based on that running has 7 lengths to find with that horse, while trainer Alan King has never won the Ascot Gold Cup.
LONE EAGLE 40/1
Trainer: Ralph Beckett
Jockey: Rossa Ryan
Age: 5
Recent Flat Form: 357-52
Last Race: 2nd Ormonde Stakes (Chester)
Recent run was a fair second in the Group Three Ormonde Stakes at Chester in the middle of May – this will be a big step up in class and also in trip for this Beckett runner and the ratings suggest he’s got 8lbs to find with the likes of Coltrane.
BIG CALL 80/1
Trainer: C Ferland
Jockey: Stephane Pasquier
Age: 6
Recent Flat Form: 16-413
Last Race: 3rd Prix Vicomtesse Vigier (Longchamp)
Bidding to become the first French-trained winner of the Ascot Gold Cup since Westerner in 2005. Two-time Group 3 winner in his homeland and last in action running a close third in the Prix Vicomtesse Vigier at Longchamp. Best form has been with give underfoot too and as his name suggest it would be a ‘big call’ to tip this one.
NATE THE GREAT 200/1
Trainer: Andrew Balding
Jockey: Harry Davies
Age: 7
Recent Flat Form: 61-552
Last Race: 2nd Henry II Stakes (Sandown)
Andrew Balding has the better fancied Coltrane in the race but if that one has an off-day will pin his hopes on this 7 year-old. However, certainly no spring chicken in a race like this and with 36 career runs unlikely to have anymore improvment left in him. On a plus, has won over 2m in the past, but was just over 12 lengths behind his stablemate Coltrane at Ascot two runs back so a lot to do.
TASHKHAN 80/1
Trainer: Brian Ellison
Jockey: James Doyle
Age: 5
Recent Flat Form: 543-34
Last Race: 4th Prix de Barbeville (Longchamp)
Was just under 4 lengths behind Big Call the last day in France so not only has ground to make up with that French runner, but is also rated just 108 and around 10lbs off the main players. That said, was actually a cracking 5th in this race last season – beaten only 5 lengths behind Kyprios, who isn’t in the race this year, so you never know.
WISE EAGLE 33/1
Trainer: Adam Nicol
Jockey: Daniel Tudhope
Age: 6
Recent Flat Form: 141-12
Last Race: 2nd Sagaro Stakes (Ascot)
Big day for trainer Adam Nicol here and this horse was only 4 3/4 lengths behind Coltrane at Ascot last time out in the Sagaro Stakes. Has won 8 of his 18 runs on the turf too, so knows how to get his head in front, but is yet to win outside of handicap company. On a plus, stays well, with wins over 2m2f last year so could surprise and run into a place if some of the main players fail to last out.
