Are the golf world rankings a good indicator of who will win the Masters?
Who’s in the top three of the current world rankings?
Scottie Scheffler is most bookmaker‘s top pick to win the Masters and he is leading the current golf world rankings. He’s averaging 11 points and has 533 in total. He’s also won the most points in 2024 so far with 222. He could be further ahead too but he’s lost a significant amount in 130.
Second to Scheffler on the list is Northern Ireland’s pride and joy – Rory Mcllroy – who’s looking for his first ever Masters win and the cherry on top of a career Grand Slam.
Mcllroy is also a big hitter – which Augusta favours – Mcllroy has a driving distance of 326 yards. Mcllroy has 346 in points, averaging 7. He’s lost 103 points but has won 79 and he could prove to be a nuisance for Scheffler.
Just cracking the top three is Jon Rahm. The Spaniard is trying to make it back to back Masters wins and experience is always key to tough competitions.
Rahm is in pole position to challenge for the Masters despite playing in five events less than Scheffler and Mcllroy. Rahm has produced 256 points with an average of 6.
Can rankings really predict the winner?
The last 10 Masters winners were all in the top 25 world ranking before the tournament began. There has only been two shock winners that didn’t make it to the top 50 on the ranking.
Of course, good form counts for everything as well. Nine of the last champions will have registered a win in their previous six tour starts and the two exceptions managed a runner-up finish.
The Masters famously favour the big hitters too because of the Augusts being one of the largest courses on tour and the layout being a 72-par.
Experience also plays a big part. However, a golfer hasn’t won the Masters back-to-back in over 20 years ago. Can Rahm break that record or will Scheffler prove why he’s the favourite?
