Weigh Anchor Runs At Wetherby Today
When naming a UK racehorse there are many rules and hoops you have to jump through to get it approved – mainly getting the BHA (British Horse Racing Authority) to give it the green light.
However, there are often some cheeky owners who will try their luck in attempting to get a funny racehorse name through the BHA net – like Dan GleeBalls, Ivor Bigun or Wayne King – and, it goes without saying, most will fail.
However, today we’ve a horse that either the BHA have allowed to pass or maybe it’s just slipped them by, called WEIGH ANCHOR.
Yes, this 3 year-old filly runs today (Weds 18th October, 2023) at Wetherby in the 2:58 – a Juvenile Hurdle over 2 miles – and is trained by the Grand National-winning stable – Donald McCain.
Owned by Mrs Sarah Leslie, Weigh Anchor has had her name given the ‘thumbs up’ by the BHA – just like a horse, who was trained by Ian Balding and ridden by Frankie Dettori, of the same title back in the 1990’s.
Today’s Weigh Anchor, however, might be no stranger to some horse racing fans in the UK, as she’s raced six times in the past – but is yet to record a win.
Of those runs, five have been on the flat, but last time she made her debut over hurdles with a fair 4th at Sedgefield.
She’s back over the jumps today and the best UK betting sites feel Weigh Anchor has a chance of ‘shuffling’ into the winners’ enclosure for the first time.

Weigh Anchor Is Not The Only Funny Horse Name To Race
Weigh Anchor (the 2nd) joins a list of other funny horse racing names that have been approved by the racing authorities over the years – including Mary Hinge, Hoof Hearted, One Off The Rail, Horsey McHorseface, Passing Wind and there was even a French horse called Big Tits back in the early 2000’s – who failed to win a race (maybe she had too much weight).
Oh, and let’s not forget the US horses called Mywifenoseveything and Thewifedoesntknow, who actually ran against each other that resulted in an hilarious commentary (watch below).

UK Rules To Naming A Racehorse
See below the main pointers and rules to naming a UK racehorse.
- Applications to Weatherbys are normally processed within one working day
- Racehorse names are a maximum of 18 characters
- Names can’t end with ‘filly’, ‘colt’, ‘stud’, ‘mare’, ‘stallion’, or horse-rated terms
- Names can’t have only numbers and must be about thirty as long as it’s spelt out
- Names can’t end with a numerical designation like 1st or 2nd
- A racehorse’s name can’t include the name of a real person or someone that has been dead for less than 50 years – unless there is written permission
- Horse’s names can’t feature in a restricted list – like past winners of major races or famous past horses – like Red Rum or Desert Orchid.
- Names can’t be offensive to religious, ethnic or political groups
- Names already in use can’t be reused until that horse has been retired (racing and breeding) for over 5 years
- The BHA (British Horse Racing Authority) has to approve any names
