Anthony Taylor has been recalled to Premier League action for Chelsea Vs. Manchester City on Sunday,  just days after Championship controversy.

Why Was Anthony Taylor Demoted To The Championship?

Anthony Taylor was demoted to Championship action following his involvement in a contentious decision in the game between Wolves and Newcastle on October 28.

Taylor awarded the visitors a controversial penalty on the stroke of half-time after Hwang Hee-chan was adjudged to have brought down Fabian Schar in the penalty area, although on second look the decision looked to be soft.

Despite this, and after a lengthy delay, Jarred Gillett, the official on duty at Stockley Park made the decision not to send Taylor to his monitor for a second look at the incident.

According to Sky Sports, the Premier League’s Independent Key Match Incidents Panel unanimously found the decision to award the penalty was incorrect, and also disagreed with the VAR’s decision not to intervene. As a result, Taylor was demoted to Championship action.

Anthony Taylor Championship Scrutiny

Taylor was once again involved in the headlines just one week after his controversial decision in the Wolves – Newcastle game.

In the game involving Preston North End and Coventry City at the weekend, Kyle McFadzean was deemed to have brought down Milutin Osmajic inside the penalty area and Taylor awarded the penalty.

However, after a closer look, the decision once again looked to be soft. Alan Browne went on to score the penalty and Preston ran out 3-2 winners leaving Coventry City supporters furious.

Taylor Set To Officate Chelsea Vs. Manchester City

Despite making two controversial decisions in quick succession, Taylor is set to officiate one of the biggest games in English football, Chelsea Vs. Manchester City, at the weekend.

This will see Taylor return to Premier League action after just one game in the Championship, and football fans are not happy about it.

On the decision, one Twitter/X user said: “Good news everyone, Anthony Taylor who was demoted to the Championship is in charge of Chelsea vs Manchester City at the weekend.”, with another saying: “Anthony Taylor got demoted to the championship for only one game week, only to be handed the biggest game in the following match week in the EPL. I think corruption and ineptitude among referees have been normalised and welcomed by the referee association.”

Do you think Anthony Taylor should be back in Premier League action so quickly?
