Aintree Horse Racing Tips: 1-2-3 Best Bets On Becher Chase Day

One of the big Aintree horse racing highlights this Saturday with the Becher Chase Fixture – one of just a handful of races that is run over the famous Grand National fences at the Liverpool track.

12 months ago we saw Ashtown Lad win the race under jockey Harry Skelton and he’s back to try and defend his title off just a 2lb higher mark.

While we’ll also see the Laura Morgan-trained Percussion, who is yet to finish out of the placings from three runs over these fences and was third in the race last year.

Both have been figuring high up the Becher Chase market with the best UK horse racing betting sites in the build up to the race and look sure to go well again.

In total there are four LIVE ITV races to take in at the Merseyside venue with the action getting going very early at 11:10am.

You can see our quickfire Aintree tips below for the ITV races, starting with the 1:30pm Handicap Chase, including our Becher Chase best bet and ending with a competitive handicap hurdle over 2m4f at 3:15pm.

1:30: Boylesports Best Odds Guaranteed Handicap Chase (GBB Race) Cl2 (4yo+ 0-145) 2m4f ITV4

SportsLens (Andy Newton) 1-2-3 Aintree Racing Tips: The opening ITV race at Aintree on Saturday looks a race that you can make cases for several – includingHeltenham, Richmond Lake, A Wave Of The Sea and last year’s winner Brave Seacsa. However, the horse that comes here off the back of a solid last run is WAR LORD, when a running on third to Elixir De Nutz in the Haldon Gold Cup at Exeter.

He’s dropped a pound for that run and with it coming off a 214-day break should be better for it. He acts well with cut in the ground too and the way he stayed on last time over shorter suggests this longer trip is worth another go with Harry Cobden riding.

Of the rest, last year’s winner Brave Seasca, who was well behind War Lord last time, can do better with that race under it’s belt. While the Anthony Honeyball yard have a fair record at the track with their chasers and run Gustavian.

2:05: Boylesports Becher Handicap Chase (Premier Handicap) (GBB Race) Cl1 (6yo+) 3m2f ITV4

SportsLens (Andy Newton) 1-2-3 Aintree Racing Tips: The Becher Chase is always a spectacle and a race that is often linked with the Grand National. However, even though we’ve had three horses win both races (see which ones here), we’ve never had a horse win both contests in the same season.

Last year Ashtown Lad won the prize and he’ll be popular for the Skelton’s to go close again off only a 2lb higher mark. However, with the Irish-trained Coko Beach, who is rated 162, coming over this means a lot of the horses get in here with low weights and some are even out of the handicap as a result.

One of those is PERCUSSION, who has just 10-2 to carry and is racing from 6lbs out of the handicap. Yes, this is not ideal, but his featherweight is a big plus over this 3m2f trip on soft ground. The horse was third in the race last year off a 6lb lower mark, but this year (because of Coko Beach being in the race) has 9lbs less in actual racing weight.

The Laura Morgan-trained 8 year-old loves the track too – his form here reads 3-3-2 – having also run second in the Grand Sefton Chase over these fences in November.

Of the rest, no trainer has won the Becher Chase more than Nigel Twiston-Davies (6 wins) so his 7 year-old Undersupervision is respected too. Also see our key Becher Chase trends here.

2:40: Boylesports Daily Money Back 2nd Juvenile Hurdle (Listed Race) (GBB Race) Cl1 (3yo) 2m1f ITV4

SportsLens (Andy Newton) 1-2-3 Aintree Racing Tips: The Paul Nicholls yard boast a 21% record with their hurdlers at the track and have their horses in great order at the moment. They’ve also won this race three times since 2016 and so their LIARI looks a solid option.

This 3 year-old hit the ground running by winning her first start over hurdles at Wincanton at the end of October, on what was his first run since coming over from France (raced three times). Soft ground is fine, Harry Cobden rides and connections have been wise to give him 41 days off since that last run.

Eagle Prince is a rare runner over the sticks for trainer Brian Ellison but has run well in his two starts – including a fourth to the very useful Burdett Road at Cheltenham last time out. While Max Of The Stars is the most experienced in the field and is yet to be out of the first two from seven runs over the sticks.

  • LIARI
  • Max Of Stars
  • Eagle Prince

3:15: Boylesports Extra Place Races Handicap Hurdle (GBB Race) Cl2 (4yo+) 2m4f ITV4

SportsLens (Andy Newton) 1-2-3 Aintree Racing Tips: A tough and competitive handicap to end the card with and the final of the Aintree tips is the Paul Nicholls runner SONIGINO. He’s got a big weight of 12st to carry as he’s the best-rated horse in the field and last time out was a fine 4th in the Greatwood Hurdle at Cheltenham.

Yes, the form of that race has taken a few knocks since, but this is a slight ease in grade and so should find things easier. He’s also a horse that’s carried weight well in the past – winning with 11-10 back in 2022 and earlier this season was a close third with 11-13 on his back.

In a race with many chances, the Twiston-Davies horses are going well so their Chance A Tune, with just 10-7, is another to note. While Holmes St Georges is one of two in the race for trainer Stuart Crawford, but jockey bookings (Daryl Jacob) suggest this is their better fancied.

  • SONIGINO
  • Chance A Tune
  • Holmes St Georges
