Aidan O’Brien Indicates He Could Run FIVE Horses In The King George at Ascot

The 2023 King George VI & Queen Elizabeth Stakes is shaping up to be one of the races of the season with many big stars possible runners at Ascot on Saturday 29th July. This is backed up with top Irish trainer Aidan O’Brien now suggesting he could even run FIVE horses in the 29th July race – spearheaded by his two-time Derby winner Auguste Rodin.

Having said that his recent Coral-Eclipse winner Paddington is on-track to head for the Sussex Stakes at Glorious Goodwood (2nd August), Aidan O’Brien has also given the heads-up about his planned runners for the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes.

The big Ascot Group One will be run on Saturday 29th July and at this stage there are 19 entries left that include Derby runner-up King Of Steel, Coronation Cup winner Emily Upjohn, Hardwicke Stakes hero Pyledriver, the Brigadier Gerard winner Hukum and also last year’s Epsom Derby victor Desert Crown.

However, there has also been a strong indication that trainer Aidan O’Brien could end up with FIVE runners in the big Ascot contest at the end of the month, with Auguste Rodin, who is topping the betting with the leading horse racing betting sites, his big fancy.

O’Brien told Nick Luck on his daily podcast that there is a ‘strong possibility’ he could end up with five runners in the King George this year with Point Lonsdale, Bolshoi Ballet, Adelaide River and Luxembourg the other possibles to join this year’s Epsom and Irish Derby winner Auguste Rodin.

Yes, O’Brien could be running four others (apart from Auguste Rodin) in the race to ensure there is a strong pace to help his Derby winner. However, it’s also worth noting he ran five in the Irish Derby but due to unfortunate circumstances with San Antonio breaking down, didn’t get the gallop he wanted that day for Auguste Rodin. .

2023 King George Possible Runners For Aidan O’Brien

AUGUSTE RODIN: Winner of the Epsom and Irish Derby and will be looking to follow his dam’s sire Galileo in adding the King George to that haul in the same season. Most bookies have him as their Ascot favourite.

LUXEMBOURG: Last seen running second to Mostahdaf in the Prince Of Wales’s Stakes at Royal Ascot and before that was a tidy winner of the Group One Tattersalls Gold Cup at the Curragh.

ADELAIDE RIVER: Second to his stablemate Auguste Rodin in the Irish Derby in early July and has since run another cracker when runner-up in the Grand Prix du Paris at Longchamp.

BOLSHOI BALLET: Ran second in the Wolferton Stakes at Royal Ascot in June and prior to that a close third in the Aston Park Stakes at Newbury.

POINT LONSDALE: In action last when third in the Coronation Cup at Epsom in June – beaten 9 1/4 lengths behind Emily Upjohn. Before that was the winner of the Huxley Stakes at the Chester May Meeting.

Aidan O’Brien Has Won The King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes Four Times

The first win in the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth for trainer Aidan O’Brien came back in 200 with Galileo, who also won the Epsom Derby that year so Auguste Rodin will be looking to follow suit.

Dylan Thomas (2007) and Duke Of Marmalade (2008) followed in consecutive seasons, with Highland Reel in 2016 O’Brien’s most recent King George winner.
