Punchestown Festival Trends: Tuesday 25th April 2023

 4.15 – KPMG Champion Novice Hurdle (Grade 1) (5yo+) 2m 1/2f

All eyes will be on the Supreme Novices’ Hurdle runner-up Facile Vega as the Willie Mullins yard look to win this race for a nineth time. He’s expected to go off as the market leader and we’ve seen 9 of the last 17 favourites win.

5.25 – William Hill Champion Chase (Grade 1) (5yo+) Winner €86,800 2m

Energumene won this race last year and is back for more – this time as the two-time Champion Chaser. He’s another Willie Mullins hot-pot at the meeting and we’ve seen the last two market leaders win the race. The yard will be hunting their seventh win in the race.

Punchestown Festival Trends: Wednesday 26th April 2023

5.55 – Ladbrokes Punchestown Gold Cup (Grade 1) (5yo+) 3m 1/2f

Cheltenham Festival Gold Cup winner Galopin Des Champs is the star on day two as he looks to win his seventh race over fences. Willie Mullins has also won 5 of the last 9 runnings of this race – including 3 of the last four. It will be one of the shocks of the Punchestown Festival if he’s not winning again.

Cheltenham Champion Bumper winner A Dream To Share will be popular here having won all 4 of his starts. Bought by JP McManus before that last win and looks a shrewd purchase for the popular owner. The Cheltenham Bumper winner has produced 15 winners of this race since 1992, but a small word of warning as we’ve only had 4 winning favourites win the last 17.

5.25 – Paddy Power Champion Hurdle (Grade 1) 2m

State Man was an impressive winner of the Irish Champion Hurdle and wasn’t disgraced when second to the very classy Constitution Hill at Cheltenham last time. Lucky for him, there is no CH this time and the winner of this race for the last two years – Honeysuckle – is now retired. 14 of the last 23 winners ran in the Champion Hurdle, while Willie Mullins has won the race seven times – it’s likely to be 8 after this week!

4.25 – Ballymore Four Year-Old Hurdle (Grade 1) 2m

Lossiemouth got back to winning ways when taking the Triumph Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival last month and this classy grey mare will be a strong fancy to go in again. She had several others in this race in behind that day and will also get the handy 7lbs mares’ allowance again. Rich Ricci, who owns Lossiemouth, also loves to target this prize – he’s won 3 of the last 5.
