The 2023 Grand National runners are starting to take shape as we race towards the Saturday 15th April renewal. There are currently 50 Grand National horses entered, but this will whittle down to a maximum of 40 runners between now and the big day.

We’ll See a Maximum Of 40 Grand National Runners Heading To 2023 Aintree Race
There will be a maximum of 40 Grand National runners for the 2023 race on Saturday 15th April. At this stage there are still 50 horses holding an entry and a chance to run in the world’s greatest steeplechase.
However, this number will drop down further with horses pulling out between now and the race – with the final Grand National runners set to be announced on Thursday 13th April.
As it stands the top 40 Grand National runners entered in the race (see list below) will get into the race, but those numbered 41+ will need horses ahead of them to drop out to then move up into a coveted ‘top 40’ slot.
A bit like the old ‘Top of the Pops’ top 40 music chart back in the day!
2023 Grand National Runners – The Main Players
Here are the top ten 2023 Aintree runners that have the lowest Grand National odds at the moment.
CORACH RAMBLER @ 13/2
Age: 9
Trainer: Lucinda Russell
Weight: 10-5
Won the Ultima Handicap Chase at the 2023 Cheltenham Festival and since then has shot to the head of the Grand National betting market. Is a hold-up performer that likes to pick off runners late on, which might make him vulnerable to some traffic problems. While, when he does he the front, the tends to idle, so jockey Derek Fox might have to play his hand late if in contention towards the elbow. On a plus, represents the 2017 Grand National-winning yard of Lucinda Russell, but with only three Cheltenham winners taking the National since 1961 (same season) this is a big stat to overcome.
NOBLE YEATS @ 8/1
Age: 8
Trainer: Emmet Mullins
Weight: 11-11
The current Grand National champ, who defied the trends last year to become the first 7 year-old since 1940 to win the Aintree showpiece. Now a year older and has returned this season as well as ever to win the Many Clouds Chase at Aintree in December. He was last seen running on well to take 4th in the Cheltenham Gold Cup. The return to this longer trip is a plus and he’ll be looking to become only the third back-to-back Grand National winner since 1974 – with Red Rum and Tiger Roll the others. Noble Yeats is also rated 19lbs higher this year and in actual weight carried will have 11-11 this time as opposed to 10-10 last year.
DELTA WORK @ 7/1
Age: 10
Trainer: Gordon Elliott
Weight: 11-4
The 2022 Grand National third and looks to have every chance of getting involved again. However, it’s worth pointing out that only 2 past winners in the last 36 years either won (or placed) in the race the previous season. That said, Delta Work heads into the race in tip-top form after winning the Cross Country Chase at the Cheltenham Festival recently – a race he also won 12 months ago before heading to Aintree. He’s rated a pound lower this year too and will have 5lbs less in weight to carry. He was 22 lengths behind Nobel Yeats last year, but has a big weight pull this time to suggest he can get a lot closer. He’ll be looking to give trainer Gordon Elliott his third National win and also provide the Gigginstown House Stud with their fourth success since 2016.
ANY SECOND NOW @ 16/1
Age: 11
Trainer: Ted Walsh
Weight: 11-12
Not getting any younger at 11, but the 2023 Grand National will be his third try in the race and he’s done well over the years. He finished with a silver in 2022 and a bronze in 2021, so if that sequence ‘3-2’ continues he’ll be winning this year – right? Trained by Ted Walsh, who won the National in 2000 with Papillon, while he comes here in winning form after taking a Navan G2 Chase recently. The negative though is he’s rated 8lbs higher this year, but despite his age we have seen three 11 year-old winners since 2012.
MR INCREDIBLE @ 14/1
Age: 7
Trainer: Willie Mullins
Weight: 10-4
From the powerful Willie Mullins yard, whose sole National success to date came in 2005 with Hedgehunter. Gets in here with a featherweight of just 10-4, which is an obvious plus and was last seen running a fair third in the Kim Muir Chase at the Cheltenham Festival. The downside would be his age though. Yes, we saw a 7 year-old win last year, but Noble Yeats was the first 7 year-old since 1940 to land the prize. This would be his first run in the National.
GAILLARD DU MESNIL @ 14/1
Age: 7
Trainer: Willie Mullins
Weight: 11-0
Another of the main Willie Mullins 2023 Grand National runners. Not the quickest horse, but, of course, that doesn’t matter in the National. What he lacks in speed he makes up for in stamina and that was on show again last time when winning the NH Chase at the Cheltenham Festival over 3m6f. From 9 career runs over fences he’s yet to finish out of the first three (2 wins) and looks a typical National-type. This will be his first try over these fences but is a sound jumper and was also 3rd in the 2022 Irish National. The negatives though are his age (he’s another 7 year-old) and is also a recent Cheltenham winner – just three National winners that same season also won at the Festival.
LONGHOUSE POET @ 16/1
Age: 9
Trainer: Martin Brassil
Weight: 11-0
Decent staying chaser that was sixth in the National last year. Yes, he was 34 lengths back that day, but is rated the same this time and has 4lbs less in actual racing weight. Last year was giving Noble Yeats 8lbs, but this year he’s getting 11lbs off the current champ – so a 19lbs turnaround. Comes into the race in winning form too – having beaten Roi Mage at Down Royal in March over 3m2f. Another year older and with that track experience under his belt has to have a leading chance of getting much closer this time.
GALVIN @ 20/1
Age: 9
Trainer: Gordon Elliott
Weight: 11-11
Another of the classier Irish staying chasers that could run here. From the Gordon Elliott yard that know the time of day in this race and warmed-up nicely for this with a close second to Delta Work in the Cross-Country Chase at Cheltenham last time. He’s won 8 of his 18 starts over fences and been in the top two 12 times. Would be his first try in the race but has only fallen once in his career. Is another, however, that would be carrying a big weight, which might be his downfall in the end. Since 1978, 134 horses have tried to win with more than 11-5 – just two winners (Many Clouds, 11-9 and Neptune Collonges, 11-6).
CAPODANNO @ 25/1
Age: 7
Trainer: Willie Mullins
Weight: 11-5
Third of the main Willie Mullins Grand National runners and looks the main hope for top owner JP McManus, who won this race in 2010 with Don’t Push It. But is also another 7 year – the third of this age from the Mullins entries. Promising chaser though, who was a Grade One winner at Punchestown last April. Had a few issues since but bounced back to win on his return at Gowran Park in February. First run in the race and stamina an unknown, but if able to defy the age trend and take to the fences, not without a chance.
LE MILOS @ 16/1
Age: 8
Trainer: Dan Skelton
Weight: 10-11
Improving staying chaser that since switching from the Tim Vaughan yard to the Dan Skelton team has won twice and been second once. Landed the Coral Gold Cup at the end of November at Newbury over 3m2f, to show he stays well and is still only 8. Debut in the National but gets in here with a nice racing weight of 10-11 too and would be looking to give his trainer his first win in this famous race.
