St Leger Trip Through Memory Lane: Five Of The Best Doncaster Winners Since 2000
2021: HURRICANE LANE
Trainer: Charlie Appleby
Jockey: William Buick
The most recent winner after taking the 2021 renewal. Hurricane Lane was the nineth winning favourite in the last 20 renewals of the St Leger and was also giving the ‘boys in blue’ of Godolphin their seventh success in this Doncaster Group One – they need just one more win as owners to be the most successful in the race’s history. Hurricane Lane also gave trainer Charlie Appleby his first winner in the race but was providing jockey William Buick with his third victory.
2018: KEW GARDENS
Trainer: Aidan O’Brien
Jockey: Ryan Moore
The most recent St Leger winner for trainer Aidan O’Brien in the race, who have mopped up six successes in total. He powered home to win the 2018 running by 2 1/4 lengths from Lah Ti Dar and in the process was giving jockey Ryan Moore his second St Leger win after taking the prize the year before with Capri. Kew Gardens went onto race as a 4 year-old, but only won one more race – the 2019 Champions Long Distance Cup at Ascot.
2011: MASKED MARVEL
Trainer John Gosden
Jockey: William Buick
The 2011 St Leger winner – Masked Marvel – was a 3-length winner of the race from the Michael Owen-owned Brown Panther. This 3 year-old was giving trainer John Gosden his fourth St Leger winner and with a later win in 2019 (Logician) the yard have a total St Leger haul of five. Ridden by William Buick and owned at the time by Bjorn Neilsen, of Stradivarius fame, the horse surprisingly never won another race from his next 14 outings of which the 8 of those came in Australia after being sold in Sept 13.
2008: CONDUIT
Trainer Sir Michael Stoute
Jockey: Frankie Dettori
Surprisingly this 3 year-old is the sole St Leger winner for trainer Sir Michael Stoute. He came home by 3 lengths in the 2008 running under jockey Frankie Dettori, who was taking over from Ryan Moore, who preferred Stoute’s other runner in the race – Doctor Fremantle. The win gave stand-in Dettori his fifth winner in the Group One and after winning with Logician (2019) the pocket Italian has six St Leger successes to his name. Conduit won the Breeders’ Cup Turf (Santa Anita) later that year and also in 2009.
2000: MILLENARY
Trainer: John Dunlop
Jockey: Richard Quinn
After winning the St Leger in 1986 (Moon Madness) and 1997 with Silver Patriarch, trainer John Dunlop added Millenary to his St Leger CV three years later. Millenary was the earlier winner of the Gordon Stakes at Glorious Goodwood that season and raced on until he was an 8 year-old – winning races like the Doncaster Cup (2004 & 2005) and the Yorkshire Cup in 2004.
