Andy Newton’s ‘LAY OF THE DAY’ Horse Racing Tip On Saturday: 1:15pm Cheltenham – IL RIDOTO

The Paul Nicholls runner IL RIDOTO will be popular here having run a blinder to be second in the December Gold Cup last month – oh, and he also took this prize 12 months ago.

However, there are several reasons to think he won’t follow-up this time.

Firstly, that win still remains his last and is now also rated 10lbs higher than 12 months ago.

He’s also up 5lbs for that hard-fought second last time, plus he looked to have a very hard race that day with a ding-dong battle with the winner Fugitif, which could have left its mark.

Therefore, he’s not only got to kick on from that duel but do so off a 5lb higher rating and also with 11lbs more in actual racing weight too. Has 11-6 here and carried just 10-9 last time (won this carrying 10-12 last year).

Add in a whole host of others with big chances – including the Venetia Williams pair Easy As That, Victtorino and the fourth in that December Gold Cup – Grandeur D’Ame, then we’ll have plenty running for us.

The final niggle is that last win (in this race) also came with the first-time cheekpieces on. They clearly worked and he’s been wearing them ever since, but sometimes this new headgear has an instant impact and wears off a tad.

It also still remains that Il Ridoto is just 1-from-11 if you go back further than his last success. All-in-all enough reasons to think this Nicholls entry is no real value at the prices.

What Is Lay Betting On Horse Racing?

In short lay betting is to bet on something NOT to happen.

With the introduction of betting exchanges like Betfair, punters can now bet on a horse or a team NOT to win by effectively becoming a bookmaker.

This can be done by staking against a horse or team on a betting exchange.

For example, if you think a horse won’t win a race and it’s 3.00 (2/1). Then you could lay this horse for ÂŁ10.

If the horse loses, you will win ÂŁ10 (less any set commission). Or if the horse wins you will have to pay out ÂŁ20 (just like a bookmaker would).

See below another example – if you were to oppose Galopin Des Champs at 2.80 for ÂŁ10.

You can see the liability if the horse wins would be ÂŁ18. Or if the horse loses you will win ÂŁ10 (less any commission).
