Newcastle United legend Alan Shearer was not best pleased with VAR’s performance in the Magpies’ 1-1 draw away at PSG in the Champions League following a late penalty for the hosts.
Shearer took to Twitter to express his disgust at the decision by VAR to award PSG a penalty in the 96th minute, which was subsequently converted by the ever reliable Kylian Mbappe from 12 yards.
The spot kick cancelled out Alexander Isak’s first-half opener, which had Newcastle supporters dreaming of a magical night in the French capital.

As the game entered the final few minutes of stoppage time, Valentino Livramento was punished for a handball inside the area – which many have argued was the wrong decision since the ball appeared to his chest first.
The result in Paris has significant ramifications for Newcastle’s hope of qualifying for the Champions League knockout stages, which could see them dumped out of Europe on Matchday 6.

How Can Newcastle Qualify For The Round Of 16?
The Group F standings are as follows heading into the final round of fixtures:
- Borussia Dortmund: W3 D1 L1 – 10 points
- PSG: W2 D1 L2 – 7 points
- Newcastle: W1 D2 L2 – 5 points
- AC Milan: W1 D2 L2 – 5 points
In order to qualify for the next stage, the Magpies must beat AC Milan at home in two weeks – and they also need Borussia Dortmund to get a result vs PSG in Germany.
If PSG draw in Dortmund and Newcastle beat Milan, they will both be on eight points. This outcome is favourable for the Premier League side, who will advance to the Round of 16 in a tiebreaker.
If PSG beat Dortmund, Newcastle cannot progress in the competition and will need a result vs Milan to secure a place in the Europa League. If it’s a draw, tiebreak rules will be introduced once again but the Magpies would stay in Europe on goal difference.
