Paddy Power Gold Cup Tip: Four Horses To Take On The Cheltenham Bookies With
There will be many a Paddy Power Gold Cup tip flying about on Saturday, as the 14-runner Cheltenham race is as competitive as ever – you can see the full line-up here.
Trainer Paul Nicholls will be eying a third success in the day two November Meeting showcase race and it’s hard to fault his hand with Stage Stage and Il Ridoto flying the Ditcheat flag.
Both are past course winners and Cheltenham Festival fans will remember Stage Star romping away with the Turners Novices’ Chase back in March. He’s since flopped at Aintree but has been freshened up with 219-day off and returns to his beloved Prestbury Park, where he’s 2-from-2 over fences.
Notlongtillmay was back in second in the Turners and is reopposing on 3lb better terms, so has to enter the picture. While silver medal course specialist Fugitif is sure to have many each-way backers with his last runs at the course reading 2-2-2.
Can The Real Whacker Win With A Huge Weight
We’ve also got another current Festival winner in the gusty The Real Whacker. This Patrick Neville chaser won the Brown Advisory Novices’ Chase back in March and the form of that win could not have worked out any better.
The horse he beat – Gerri Colombe – followed-up at Aintree and won last weekend at Down Royal, which has made him one of the big fancies in the 2024 Cheltenham Gold Cup market.
He’s the clear top-rated in the field (162) though and as a result has to try and shoulder 12st to victory if he’s to keep his 3-from-3 chase track record intact. The last horse to win with 12st+ was Dunkirk in 1965.
Money Has Come For Easy As That
The only winner for the popular Venetia Williams in this race came back in 1999 with the Norman Williamson-ridden The Outback Way. However, is the money is anything to go by, that could change this Saturday with her Easy As That well-backed. This 8 year-old is lightly raced with only four runs over fences (2 wins) but will love the softer ground – having won in heavy and soft conditions – plus gets in with just 10-7 on his back.
Skelton Eyes First Winner With Unexpected Party
Unexpected Party is another to note after winning on his return run at Chepstow last month. This Skelton horse was 5th in the Turners Novices’ Chase so has ground to make up with Stage Star and Notlongtillmay but is 9lbs and 6lbs better off at the weights.
While the form of his last win over Knappers Hill has also been franked with the runner-up winning at Wincanton last weekend.
Looking at the Paddy Power Gold Cup trends, these tell us that 71% of the last 21 winners carried 11st or less and also finished in the top four last time out.
Several will tick these stats, but many won’t either – including Stage Star, who has 11-7 to carry and was also fifth last time out.
Angels To ‘Delight’ Paddy Power Gold Cup Backers
So, the horse that is chanced is the grey ANGELS BREATH at 11/1 with BetMGM.
The Sam Thomas runner has only raced nine times in his career, which is not a lot for a 9 year-old.
This is because the former Nicky Henderson runner had some issues back in 2019 and was out of action for almost three years. Connections were patient and now with the Sam Thomas yard looks worth giving a chance too.
Don’t forget back in 2019 he slammed First Flow by 8 lengths at Ascot (watch below).
Four of his nine career runs have come over fences but has won 50% of those and came back from a 200-day break at the end of last month with a fair second at Cheltenham. That effort also came with 12st on his back, so the 10-10 here will help and he’s also got winning form on soft and heavy ground.
The final plus is jockey Jonathan Burke in the saddle – the winning of the Paddy Power Gold Cup 12 months ago. He’ll be looking to become the first back-to-back winning pilot since Timmy Murphy won the race on Celestial Gold and Our Vic – both for trainer Martin Pipe and owner David Johnson.
Watch Angels Delight winning on his chase debut back in 2019 at Ascot.
Paddy Power Gold Cup Best Of The Rest: Each-Way Cheltenham Plays
Easy As That: Has been well-supported in recent days due to acting well in the past on soft and heavy ground. Also has only 10-7 to carry and we also know he stays further than this 2m4f trip which will help in conditions.
Unexpected Party: From the Dan Skelton yard that have saddled three thirds in this race in as many years. Won well the last day at Chepstow and the form of that race has been boosted since.
Torn And Frayed: Back from a long lay-off so fitness will be on trust. But hails from the four-time winning yard of Nigel Twiston-Davies has just 10-2 to carry and is also a course winner. Might be worth having a saver on if back to his best.
