Kalvin Phillips is set to start for England against Italy tonight in their Euro 2024 qualifier, with what will be his first competitive start for his country since the reverse fixture in March.

This game will mark Phillips’ first start for England since the reverse fixture in Naples seven months ago, where the Three Lions won 2-1 thanks to goals from Declan Rice and Harry Kane.

Phillips will replace Jordan Henderson, who has come under fire recently following his move to the Saudi Pro League. The former Liverpool midfielder was booed by some England supporters when he was subbed off in last Friday’s 1-0 win over Australia.
Gareth Southgate and a number of Three Lions stars have come out to support Henderson since.

Phillips has not started a Premier League game for City since May and has played just 70 minutes in the league so far this season, and some fans have questioned Southgate’s decision to continue picking him in recent times.
The former Leeds United midfielder was also snubbed by Pep Guardiola earlier this month despite Rodri picking up a three-game suspension.
However, he will get the chance to prove himself at Wembley tonight when England host Italy. His defensive strengths are what has persuaded Southgate to give him another opportunity against a side that may prove tough to break down.
It will be the the first time Italy will play at the iconic stadium since they won Euro 2020 there over two years ago.
