Grand National and Gold Cup winning jockey Rachael Blackmore will ride on the flat at Newmarket today, in a rare appearance in the ÂŁ100k Cesearewitch Handicap.
Rachael Blackmore To Ride In Today’s Cesarewitch
Top Irish jumps jockey, Rachael Blackmore is better known for plying her trade over the jumps – mainly in Ireland – but, that said, is also no stranger to venturing to the UK shores with success either.
Blackmore rode into the history books by becoming the first female-winning jockey in the Grand National, when guiding home the JP McManus-owned Minella Times to Aintree glory in 2021.
While a year later she added to that by winning the 2022 Cheltenham Gold Cup at the Festival.
Add in two Champion Hurdle wins on the popular mare Honeysuckle in 2021 and 2022, then the Rachael Blackmore CV when riding in England is decent, to say the least, and she’s back in the UK again today (Sat 14th Oct) – but NOT over the jumps.
Blackmore Booked To Ride Jackfinbar For Willie Mullins
Rachael Blackmore has been booked by Willie Mullins to ride on the flat in today’s ÂŁ100k Cesarewitch Handicap at Newmarket, on what will be only her second ride at the venue.
In fact, Blackmore has only ever ridden on the flat twice in the UK in the past.
She will ride JACKFINBAR for trainer Willie Mullins, who is also more famed for running horses over jumps, but does also have a top record in Saturday’s Cesarewitch – winning it three times since 2018.
Mullins also runs Zenon, M C Muldoon, Mr Escobar and Lot Of Joy in the competitive Saturday showpiece.

Jackfinbar Ran In This Season’s Ebor Handicap at York
Jackfinbar is joint second top-weight in the race and might be familiar to UK horse racing fans after running 12th in the York Ebor Handicap at the end of August (watch below). While prior to that York run, he also ran well at the Galway Festival this season when 4th of 17 to Brazil.
He’s since, however, run well down the field at Leopardstown and the Curragh, so might require a bit of ‘Blackmore Magic’ to leave those runs behind.
That said, before heading to the Mullins yard, Jackfinbar was a fair sort for the Harry Dunlop yard and even won a Group Three in France in September 2018 – anywhere near a return to that level would see he go well.
