Chepstow Horse Racing Tips On Friday 13th October 2023
See below as we preview the two main horse races on the Friday card at Chepstow as the return of the better jumping action ramps up a few notches.
The 7-race card at Chepstow, the venue of the Welsh Grand National, kicks off with two LIVE ITV4 races on a busy afternoon for the channel with five races at Newmarket’s Future Champions Festival also on their schedule.
1:35: Unibet Veterans’ Handicap Chase (Leg 7 Of The Veterans’ Chase Series) Cl2 (9yo+ 0-150) 2m7½f ITV4
Some familiar faces in this veterans’ race with the runners having to be 10 years-old+ in order to run.
It could be the battle of the Bowen brother jockeys, with James riding the in-form Landofsmiles for his dad Peter, while Sean gets the leg-up on the Olly Murphy runner Thomas Darby – the pair are currently well-fancied in the betting.
Of the duo, Landofsmiles is sure to attract a lot of interest after wins at Uttoxeter and Cartmel, so heads here on a three-timer. He’s up just 5lbs for the last of those successes, which came at the end of August, and is also a proven CD winner at Chepstow after landing a handicap chase here back in 2021.
We can also expect the Paul Nicholls runners to be well-tuned during this early part of the new jumps season and this is a fixture the Ditcheat handler likes to target, including winning this race in 2020. He’s also got an overall 26% strike-rate at the track too and so another for the shortlist is his Danny Kirwan.
This 10 year-old hasn’t fulfilled what he promised a few seasons back but is a horse that’s had his issues. Still fairly lightly-raced for his age (19 runs) and has only had 9 of those over fences. Of those chase outings, he’s hit the top two 5 times (2 wins) and it’s interesting that Nicholls has given him a wind op over the summer.
Court To Be The Chepstow Master
However, the each-way value in the race looks to be COURT MASTER (e/w), who hails from the Neil Mulholland yard that have a cracking 31% strike-rate at Chepstow with their chasers.
Now a 10 year-old, he’s won 5 of his 19 runs over fences and has been kept ticking over in the summer with runs in July and September. Yes, he unseated last time at Bangor when probably beaten at the time, but the slightly shorter trip here will help, and that day (in a lower grade) had to try and win with 11-10 on his back.
He’s only carrying 10-2 here, albeit in a better contest, but likes to get on with things from the front and could make a bold bid out top under the useful Adam Wedge.
It’s worth noting Mulholland also runs the JP McManus-owned Chirico Vallis.

2:10: Unibet Persian War Novices’ Hurdle (Grade 2) (GBB Race) Cl1 (4yo+) 2m3½f ITV4
The Persian War Novices’ Hurdle is a race the Paul Nicholls yard likes to win – they’ve landed the spoils twice since 2016 – and also boast an impressive 29% strike-rate with their hurdlers at the track, which is the best on show here.
They try again this Friday with CAPTAIN TEAGUE, who is a lightly-raced former Irish Pointer that ran the very useful A Dream To Share to 2 1/2 lengths in the Cheltenham Festival Champion Bumper, which is very decent form with that JP McManus horse one of the big Supreme Novices’ Hurdle favourites this season.
This will be Captain Teague’s first run over hurdles, but the Nicholls camp would have schooled him plenty with this race in mind and their main pilot Harry Cobden, who has ridden him the last twice and has a 33% strike-rate over hurdles here, continues in the saddle.
Everyonesgame Respected On Better Ground
Of the rest, jockey Lilly Pinchen has a decent 43% record riding over hurdles at the track and rides the Charlie Longsdon-trained Everyonesgame. This 6 year-old improved to win two races in the summer and would have found the ground way too soft last time at Market Rasen when 8th of 12. He’s respected back on quicker conditions.
While the winning machine that is Mullinaree is also respected. This Milton Harris runner has won his last five on the spin and has been freshened up 4 months off since the last of those in June. He’s up only another 4lbs here and could have more to come, despite this being a step up in grade and his toughest assignment yet.
