The ‘Super Sunday’ slot for Sky Sports has been a staple for Premier League enthusiasts over recent years, however Gameweek 7 will see a Sunday without a 4:30 match. This is the first time that no game will be broadcasted this season – but why has this happened?
Super Sundays 2023-24
Below are the fixtures we have seen at 4:30pm on Super Sunday, so far.
GW1: Chelsea 1-1 Liverpool
GW2: West Ham 3-1 Chelsea
GW3: Newcastle 1-2 Liverpool
GW4: Arsenal 3-1 Man United
GW5: Everton 1-3 Arsenal
GW6: Sheffield United 0-8 Newcastle
Why Is There No 4:30 Kick Off This Sunday?
As previously mentioned, Gameweek 7 will see no Sunday afternoon kick off for the first time this season – which has bemused some Premier League supporters.
This fixture has brought some classic encounters already, Arsenal leaving it late to beat Man United, Newcastle putting eight past Sheffield United and Liverpool’s last minute double to beat Newcastle.
This Saturday (30th September) will bring two televised matches, Aston Villa host Brighton at 12:30 on TNT Sports, and Spurs welcome Liverpool at 5:30 on Sky Sports.
There will also be an earlier kick-off on Sunday, as Nottingham Forest face Brentford at home – but that is where the action ends.
However, the reasoning for the 4:30pm kick off being avoided this week relies on two newly promoted sides – Luton and Burnley.
The clash between the two sides was set to take place in the opening weeks of the campaign, however, Luton’s stadium had not been finished in time, meaning the match was postponed.
Both sides will compete on Saturday, as Luton face Everton and Burnley travel to Newcastle. But, they are now scheduled to do battle on Tuesday 03 October, which has vacated a spot for Sunday afternoon.
They will have to play on Saturday to adhere to the Premier League guidelines, as they would not be able to play on the Sunday and then Tuesday – meaning they both have to play their respective matches on Saturday.
