This year, eight Ryder Cup rookies will be teeing it up at Marco Simone Golf & Country Club. Both Team USA and Europe have four Ryder Cup rookies on their team, all looking to make an instant impact. Read on as we take an in-depth look at who is making their debut at the 2023 Ryder Cup.
Who Are The Eight 2023 Ryder Cup Rookies?
There will be a total of eight Ryder Cup rookies teeing it up at Golf Marco Simone over the course of the three days at the 44th Ryder Cup. Both Europe and America have four debutants featuring in both of their teams, but the vast experience and winning edge is most definitely with Zach Johnson’s side.
For Team USA, four debutants have made the cut and will tee it up at Marco Simone Golf & Country Club this weekend. Of those four, three qualified automatically. This goes to show the strength in depth that Zach Johnson has at his disposal at the 2023 Ryder Cup.
US Open champion Wyndham Clark made the US team as an automatic qualifier, following his first PGA Tour win in May, followed my a major championship triumph in June. He had a strong finish to the season too, finishing 3rd in the final FedEx Cup standings.
Another major champion makes his debut for Team USA in the shape of Brian Harman. The left-handed golfer won The Open Championship at Royal Liverpool back in July and makes his debut in the Ryder Cup this week. Won both Walker Cup’s he featured in as an amateur, one of which was in Rome in 2005.
Max Homa is one of the most consistent golfers in the world, so it comes as no surprise that he earned himself an automatic spot on Team USA for the 2023 Ryder Cup. Homa finished tied nineth in the final FedEx Cup standings, as well as winning his sixth PGA Tour event earlier this year.
The only Ryder Cup rookie to be picked my captain Zach Johnson is Sam Burns. Burns won the WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play back in March, hammering Cameron Young in the final. The 27-year-old also finished joint 9th in the FedEx Cup standings and is good friends with Scottie Scheffler.

For Europe, they too take four rookies to the 2023 Ryder Cup. Captain Luke Donald has opted for three rookies in his picks, with just one of the four rookies qualifying automatically for Team Europe at Marco Simone in Rome, Italy.
That solo automatic qualifier is Scotsman Robert MacIntyre. The left-handed golfer solidified his spot on the team after finishing second in the Scottish Open behind teammate Rory McIlroy in August. MacIntyre also won the Italian Open here in 2022, around the same golf course.
Sepp Straka makes his Ryder Cup debut for Europe after a standout year on both the DP World and PGA Tours respectively. The Austrian golf sensation finished 14th in the final FedEx Cup standings, as well as finishing 7th last season. Straka won his second PGA tour title in May, as well as finishing inside the Top 7 in two major championships this year.
Ludvig Aberg is perhaps one of the hottest prospects in world golf right now, and earned himself a captain’s pick despite just turning professional in June. Won the European Masters at the beginning of September, and followed it up with a Top 10 at the BMW PGA Championship the week after. Highest ranked amateur in the world before turning pro four months ago. Also makes history as the first player to compete in a Ryder Cup before ever playing in a major championship.
Last but not least, the eighth and final Ryder Cup rookie this year is Nicolai Hojgaard. The Danish golf sensation won the first Italian Open at Marco Simone back in 2021, and followed that up with a fifth place finish this year. Clearly a fan of the golf course and a promising youngster. Also finished third and fifth in the final two qualifying events and is ranked second in scoring average and strokes gained off the tee.
