With the 44th edition of the Ryder Cup just one week away, golf fans will turn their attention to Marco Simone Golf & Country Club in Rome, Italy next week. But just who is Marco Simone and how come their 2023 Ryder Cup course is named in his honour?
Who Is Marco Simone?
A quick google search of ‘Marco Simone’ will show a whole host of articles on the 2023 Ryder Cup now. This is understandable, as the 44th edition of the Europe vs USA match play event is being hosted at Marco Simone Golf & Country Club in Rome, Italy.
If you do a little more digging, you may find someone called Marco Simone – a 54-year-old former footballer who once played for the famous AC Milan. However, this isn’t the Marco Simone that the 2023 Ryder Cup course is named after.
The Marco Simone in question actually dates back to well before the sport of golf was even invented. According to the Italian history books, a tower of stone build in the year 1000 in the Roman countryside was sold to a nobleman called Simone dei Tebraldo.
His son, Marco di Simone, helped his father add to the property, building what would become a palace. It is said that the palace they build is one of the best-preserved structures of its kind from the Argo Roman era.
So, when the golf course was designed and eventually opened in 1989, Marco Simone was quite a fitting name to give to the stunning Italian golf club.

Why Is Italy’s Ryder Cup Course Named After Marco Simone?
As we have previously touched on, the 2023 Ryder Cup golf course was named Marco Simone because of Simone dei Tebraldo and his son Marco di Simone building a palace on the site in the Argo Roman era.
The Marco Simone name dates back to before golf was even invented, so it was quite a fitting name for Italy’s Ryder Cup course.
After Marco Simone passed away, the property fell into the hands of Cardinals and Dukes amongst others across the next four centuries. It is noted in Italian history that astronomer Galileo Galileo lived in the castle in the 1600’s.
When it came to the 20th century, the castle and property fell into complete disrepair for one reason or another. That was until Italian fashion designer Laura Biagiotti and her husband, Gianni Cigna, purchased the estate in 1978.
On the Marco Simone Golf & Country Club website, Biagiotti is quoted saying, “The restoration of Marco Simone’s castle was like a madness that took me and that I followed gently. It was a pivotal choice in my life at 35 years”.
The rest is history. A world class golf course was made on the grounds of Marco Simone’s castle and here we are in 2023, about to embark on the 44th edition of the Ryder Cup. The first time Italy has hosted the prestigious golf event.
